PlayStation 4 sales have surpassed 112 million units, Sony announced today as part of its quarterly earnings report. During the first quarter of its fiscal year (April 1–June 30), Sony reported PS4 sales of 1.9 million units, bringing its lifetime sales total to 112.3 million. The year-over-year decrease — Sony sold 3.2 million PS4s during the same time frame in 2019 — was expected considering the approaching launch of PlayStation 5. The company sold 91 million software units during the quarter, according its supplemental report, with 18.5 million of those being first-party titles. Sony released The Last of Us Part II in June, which became the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever by moving four million copies in its first three days. 74% of all PlayStation game sales last quarter were digital, a significant bump compared to 53% from the same period last year. Digital spending has increased across the industry throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to record video game-related spending in the U.S earlier this year. Sony is well-positioned to capitalize on the market shift with an all-digital PlayStation 5 option this holiday. As noted by GamesIndustry.biz, its quarterly jump of 3.4 million subscriptions is one of the largest in company history. Monthly Active Users, which Sony defines as the estimated number of unique accounts that engaged with the PlayStation Network in June, reached 113 million. For comparison, Microsoft reported "nearly 90 million" monthly active Xbox Live users at the end of April. For more on PlayStation, be sure to check out everything we know about PS5.
