Dreams Could Be Where a New Generation of Electronic Musicians Get Their Start

I don’t know how to explain Dreams to you. This enigmatic storytelling platform is so expansive it’s hard to pin down. Every time I see it, however, there’s always something that blows my mind, and in a recent demo at PAX Australia, it was audio. Dreams has, is, one of the most fully featured audio interfaces I’ve seen outside of industry standard software.

And the best part is that the demo wasn’t even meant to be focused on audio. My host, game designer and programmer at Media Molecule, Daniel Kidney, had been demoing the game for about 14 hours when I got to him so he was ready to go off script. He asked what I wanted to see. And on a whim, I said audio.

Netflix Is Changing Things Up By Releasing 3 Movies in Theaters Early

Netflix is debuting three of its award-contender movies in theatres before they appear on its streaming service.

Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar-contender Roma will debut in several cinemas across LA, New York City and Mexico on November 21st, three weeks before it appears on Netflix. The Coen Brothers' The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will appear in theatres a week before on November 8, and Susanne Bier's Bird Box will also get a week-long theatrical berth beginning December 13.

The move marks an acknowledgment on behalf of the distributor that the theatrical experience is still important (particularly during awards season), despite past suggestions from Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos to the contrary.

The Flash's Jesse L. Martin Taking Leave of Absence

Fans of The Flash may have noticed that Joe West hasn't been charging into action much in Season 5, and there's a very good reason.

According to TVLine, Jesse L. Martin "suffered a back injury" over the show's hiatus, and IGN has confirmed that the actor will be taking a leave of absence from the CW series for an undetermined length of time.

Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind The Flash, provided this statement on Martin's status: "Jesse Martin is taking a medical leave of absence from The Flash. We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return as Detective Joe West."

Opinion: Netflix's Hilda and the Importance of Escapism

In the days before Netflix or Hulu - an age where cable TV was hard to come by - my passion was the outdoors. My family didn't have the money to invest in television, and the internet was hardly accessible, so I spent most of my time as a young child going outside. Of course, my parents were strict on that too - I could only play in my backyard, or near the school playgrounds.

This never stopped me from having fun though. To an adult, a backyard could be something as plain as a large area of grass and shrubs, but for 8-year-old me, it was the foundation for my imagination. Some days it was a haunted area for spooky ghosts, and other days, it was a city, filled with mesmerizing citizens of all shapes and sizes. The world was my oyster - a great escape from reality.

The Death Toll Rises in DC's Heroes in Crisis #2

Another major DC character has fallen thanks to Heroes in Crisis.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Heroes in Crisis #2!

Heroes in Crisis #1 opened with a long list of deaths, as heroes like Commander Steel, Blue Jay, Lagoon Boy, Arsenal and the Wally West Flash were murdered inside the former safe haven of Sanctuary. Even then, it was implied that there were more victims of this act of mass-murder than readers knew, and that's proven to be the case in issue #2.

Why Henry Cavill Doesn't Have a Beard in Netflix's The Witcher

Netflix's unveiling of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in full costume has polarized fans of both the video game franchise and Andrzej Sapkowski's best-selling novels, with each side giving their two cents on how the White Wolf should actually look.

The Netflix series is using the books as source material - not the popular game franchise - and in Sapkowski's novels, Geralt doesn't enjoy having a beard. In an excerpt from The Time of Contempt, Geralt asks his friend and legendary poet, Dandelion, if he can borrow his razor:

Geralt: "Do you have a razor?"

Dandelion: "Eh? Of course I do."

Geralt: "Lend it to me tomorrow morning. This beard of mine is driving me insane."

Betrayal Legacy Makes a Fantastic Horror Game Even Better

Betrayal at House on the Hill was already a well-loved board game, but its upcoming Legacy version from designer Rob Daviau has somehow made it even better. It takes the original’s randomized haunted house mechanics and centers them around the story of a single house that shifts (and gets considerably more spooky) over nearly 400 years of history.

Daviau was kind enough to sit down with us and play Betrayal Legacy’s first two scenarios ahead of its release next month. You can watch that playthrough in the video at the top of the page, though be wary that there will be spoilers for the prologue and first chapter of its 13 chapter campaign.

Netflix has given us a spooky Halloween treat and renewed Castlevania for Season 3 a few days after Season 2 debuted on the streaming service.

The series will expand from eight episodes to 10 in the upcoming season. There are no details on the plot of Season 3 so far, but the show will once again be written by Warren Ellis and directed by Sam Deats. Ellis serves as executive producer alongside Adi Shankar, Fred Seibert and Kevin Kolde.

Horror Movies by the Decade: A Century of Classics for Halloween

It’s the best time of year, and that means time to watch lots of horror movies. But while there are so many options these days – streaming services, Blu-rays, whatever TCM is airing – you might want to seek out some historic titles, and the “Doctor of the Dead” is here to help with some suggestions that cover an entire century of cinematic horror!

But look, I knew the job was dangerous when I took it. Trying to pick just one single horror movie to represent every decade from the 1910s to the present is an impossible task, so – in keeping with the spirit of the season – I’m just going to go with my gut. This list doesn’t invalidate your own picks, nor do I mean to say there aren’t plenty of equally valid options. But we only have so much time together, so let’s get started, and maybe a few of these might inspire you to go on your own Halloween season viewing binges that will last well into November and beyond.

The History of Broly

Broly has become a cult favorite villain for many Dragon Ball fans, and the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie (which hits theaters on Jan. 16) has a lot of people talking about the Legendary Super Saiyan.

Broly has only appeared in three Dragon Ball Z films; Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly - Second Coming, and Bio-Broly. While the character was designed by Dragon Ball series creator, Akira Toriyama, Toriyama did not write the story of any of those three films.

Because Broly has only appeared in films and manga side-stories until now, he is not considered part of the official Dragon Ball canon, although with Toriyama writing Dragon Ball Super: Broly (which will serve as an effective reboot of the character), that is about to change.

Sword Art Online Returns with a Bigger Arc and Bigger Threats in Alicization

Sword Art Online has been a long and exciting journey ever since it aired back in 2012. What started out as a tense mystery to find out why main hero Kazuto Kirito and many others could not log out of a game spiraled into a multi-chapter franchise as Kirito embarked with many other characters to investigate other forms of virtual MMORPGs. Now, six years later, A-1 Pictures brings us back to the world of swords and online play with the latest installment, Alicization. But is it worth the wait? And is it a reason to return to the series if you dropped it previously?

So far, Sword Art Online has been a mix of adaptation and original story. Check out the slideshow below for a brief overview of the story leading up to Alicization.

PlayStation Plus Free Games for November 2018 Announced

Sony has revealed the free games PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive in November 2018, with Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition and Yakuza Kiwami leading the charge as the free PlayStation 4 games for the month..

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is a remastered version of the over-the-top first-person shooter from People Can Fly and Epic Games, with 4K support on PS4 Pro. All previous pieces of DLC are included in the Full Clip Edition, as well. In our Bulletstorm: Full Clip review, we appreciated the visual boost but found the additional content to be underwhelming.

Yakuza Kiwami, meanwhile, is a remake of the original Yakuza, built from the ground-up using a more recent engine. IGN's Yakuza Kiwami review saw it as a great way to experience the first story in the series, though it couldn't match the most recent mainline Yakuza games. Sega has given fans no shortage of choice as of late, with Yakuza 6, Yakuza 0, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 all coming to the West within the last few years.

BBC America Greenlights Series Based on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld

BBC America has announced that it is greenlighting The Watch, a new "punk rock thriller" series inspired by the City Watch subset of novels in English author Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of books.

Co-producing The Watch with BBC America is Narrativia, which is run by Pratchett's daughter, Rhianna Pratchett. Simon Allen (The Musketeers) is the show's writer, while Hilary Salmon (Luther), Ben Donald, Rob Wilkins and Phil Collinson (Doctor Who) will executive produce.

The Watch will prominently feature Discworld characters like City Watch Captain Sam Vimes, Lady Sybil Ramkin, Carrot, Angua, Cheery, and Death. Here's Your First Look at Henry Cavill in The Witcher Netflix Series

Netflix has given us our first look at The Witcher series' star, Henry Cavill in costume as Geralt of Rivia to celebrate the show beginning formal production.

In a clip shared on Cavill's Instagram page and the Netflix Twitter account, we see the actor in full costume and makeup, with the long silver hair Geralt also sports in CD Projekt Red's video game trilogy.

We don't, however, see his prominent scars, or the beard he sported for much of The Witcher 3. Cavill is silent during the clip, but takes a swig from a flask to show that he's definitely in character.

We don't, however, see his prominent scars, or the beard he sported for much of The Witcher 3. Cavill is silent during the clip, but takes a swig from a flask to show that he's definitely in character.

Undertale Creator Announces and Releases Mysterious New Project

Following a tease yesterday, Undertale creator Toby Fox has unveiled Delta Rune, a free follow-up to 2015's Undertale.

As various Undertale fans have pointed out online, Delta Rune is an anagram for Undertale and refers to the symbol on Undertale NPC Toriel's tunic.

Delta Rune's website contains several warnings in English and Japanese about things like overriding security protocols and refraining from discussing "the program" for 24 hours in the interest of public safety.

The site says these warnings are the final ones players will receive before encouraging them to take things into their hands and allowing them to download Delta Rune for PC or Mac.

Transformers Makes for a Smashing Card Game

If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

The new Transformers Trading Card Game from creator Wizards of the Coast allows you and an opponent to roll out opposing teams of robots to see who can smash and blast their way to victory first. Yes, Wizards also makes Magic: The Gathering, but that’s not what Transformers is trying to be. It just wants to simulate a big brawl between giant robots, and in that regard, it succeeds.

How It Works

To get things started, each player assembles a team of double-sided Transformers cards that start the game in “alt-mode” aka vehicle mode, and then once per turn one can be transformed into “bot mode” by flipping the card over. The act of transforming comes with an effect like drawing extra cards, healing your team, or altering attack and defense stats. Making sure to switch back and forth between modes at the right time becomes an important part of your strategy.

Referencing a previous Nintendo earnings report in which it was stated that the Nintendo Switch console sales have reached almost 23 million units, Fortnite would have been downloaded on 11.5 million of those that are currently in the wild.

This attach rate brings to mind The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which in its first 28 days sold 925,000 units for the Nintendo Switch, while the Nintendo Switch had sold 906,000.

See How The Witcher Cast Compares to Their Video Game Counterparts

Editor's note: Not all of the cast members' characters make appearances in the games, so some actors aren't included on this list.

The cast for Netflix's upcoming adaption of The Witcher is filling out nicely, especially with the recent addition of Freya Allan as Ciri, Princess of Cintra, and Anya Chalotra as the sorceress Yennefer.

Allan and Chalotra will join Henry Cavill - previously revealed to be Geralt of Rivia - in what is sure to be an ambitious undertaking from the streaming provider. Not only is The Witcher a beloved book series written by Andrzej Sapkowski, but also a popular video game franchise, developed by Polish studio CD Projekt Red.

10 Zombie Movies You Need to Watch

I’d be remiss in my duties as a world-renowned zombie scholar and expert – yes, dear reader, there are such things! – if I didn’t remind you all to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead during this Halloween season. And for dedicated zombie aficionados, I know there’s little I can do to inform you about all the many other intriguing, entertaining, or flat-out insane zombie movies that exist beyond the timeless classic created by George Romero, John Russo, and their amazing team.

But let’s say you’re only just getting into the whole zombie "thing." Maybe you watched some Walking Dead, finally checked out Night via the recent Fathom Events screenings or the Criterion Blu-ray release (both featuring the new, stunning 4K restoration of the classic film), and now want to know: What do I watch next? In that case, may I suggest the following 10 zombie films from the entire history of the genre?

How the Director of the Metal Gear Movie Would Make a Zelda Movie

Speaking on IGN’s Comic-Con live show about his upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie, we asked director Jordan Vogt-Roberts for his take on how he would make a Zelda movie if he had the opportunity.

“The thing about Zelda is Zelda is not Lord of the Rings, right? You cannot forget how quirky and bizarre Zelda is,” Vogt-Roberts said. “I think you need to find a way to actually fuse the traditional Zelda and the very new Zelda,”

10 Best English Dubbed Anime Series

Whether you’re new to anime and seeking an accessible entry point, a longtime fan who could use a break from reading subtitles, or just looking for an excuse to revisit a classic show in a fresh way, a quality English dub has a lot to offer. As such, we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite anime dubs. Please note we opted to keep movies off this list in favor of specifically highlighting the best English dubbed shows.

Check out our picks for the 10 best English dubbed anime series in the slideshow below, or scroll down to see the list.

Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball is without question one of the most popular and recognizable anime franchises outside of Japan, and Funimation’s spectacular English dub of Dragon Ball Z is a huge reason why. Centered around Goku, who’s voiced by the wildly talented Sean Schemmel, DBZ chronicles the adventures of the aforementioned super powerful Saiyan and his friends as they fight to protect humanity from various alien threats. While yes, Dragon Ball Z is known for its crazy, over-the-top action, its beloved cast of eccentric and unforgettable characters is what has truly made Dragon Ball the phenomenon it is today. This is due in no small part to the involvement of one of the most prolific and talented voice actors ever, Christopher Sabat, who does an unbelievable job bringing multiple characters from the series, including Vegeta and Piccolo, to life. — Alex Osborn

Breach Blends All Your Favorite Game Genres with Mythology

Breach is a potent mixture of the last decade of game design. Like something engineered in an off-the-grid laboratory, its a multi-headed creation spliced together with DNA from hack-and-slash action games, hero shooters, MOBAs, and MMOs. It’s currently growing and coming into its own, boiling down that blend into a jump-in-and-play experience of quick 15-minute solo, cooperative, or competitive matches.

After getting hands-on with a healthy section of the technical alpha, what surprises me most about Breach is how well that insane-sounding concoction works. You pick a class – complete with its own basic attacks, skill shots, and abilities – and fight through a series of maps that are broken into six sectors. Each sector has an objective, so you and up to three other players fight to complete the objective in the allotted time while the enemy team of monsters, minions, mythological nightmares, and in some modes player-controlled demons tries to delay or stop you.
