Director Gareth Edwards has revealed that the original drafts of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story originally contained more of the traditional elements of the series, including an opening crawl and wipe transitions.
Speaking to Empire, Edwards said that screenwriter Gary Whitta's first draft included the "long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" crawl, but that later production meetings nixed the idea.
"Probably like six months before we were filming," he explained, "we were in a meeting, and they talked about not having an opening crawl, because these are standalone films, not part of the sagas. And if I'm honest, there was an initial kind of like, 'whaaaa? I want the crawl!'"
