Resident Evil: Final Chapter No Match for Split at Box Office

M. Night Shyamalan's horror thriller Split held strong in first place at the domestic box office this weekend, earning an estimated $26.3 million.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter debuted in fourth place. Sony's latest installment in video game-inspired film franchise, which concludes the story of Milla Jovovich's Alice, opened to an estimated $13.9 million.

As noted by Variety, the film's global total currently stands at $80 million worldwide. The Resident Evil series traditionally performs better overseas, with approximately 80 percent of the earnings grossed by its prior two entries coming from international markets. As such, The Final Chapter's modest North American debut was in line with Sony's expectations.
