Legendary comedian Robin Williams was turned down for the role of Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone because of a stipulation that all actors in the film must be British.
Speaking to The Huffington Post, casting director Janet Hirshenson explained that Williams had wanted the role of the half-giant Hogwarts groundskeeper.
“Robin
had called
because he really wanted to be in the movie," she explained, "but it was a British-only edict, and once he said no to Robin, he wasn’t going to say yes to anybody else, that’s for sure."
