Indiana Jones 5: Steven Spielberg Won't Direct, James Mangold in Talks to Replace Him

Steven Spielberg will reportedly not direct Indiana Jones 5, with Logan director, James Mangold, in talks to take his place. As reported by Variety, Spielberg will remain on as a producer and this is entirely his decision. It is said he wants to hand the franchise to a new generation. George Lucas is also reportedly not involved in this film at all. Harrison Ford is still on board, and two weeks ago the actor said filming begins in two months. The film is currently set for July 9, 2021. He has directed the past four Indiana Jones movies with Lucas credited on the story for each film. Writing duties were originally handled by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull writer David Koepp, but reportedly were given to Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jonathan Kasdan in 2018. Mangold recently released Ford v. Ferrari starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon. Deadline said as recently as January that Mangold was reuniting with Damon for an adaptation of the novel The Force. Mangold was currently working on the film for Disney's 20th Century Studios. This comes less than a month after producer Kathleen Kennedy said that some final touches on the script were all that's left before production. "We’re working away, getting the script where we want it to be and then we’ll be ready to go,” Kennedy said. “Harrison Ford will be involved, yeah. It’s not a reboot; it’s a continuation. Shia Labeouf's character was also not in Koepp's script as of 2017 and Koepp had no contact with Lucas. Ford has since spoken about the film, but offered very few details a couple of weeks ago. “Well, I’m not going to share the story with you because that doesn’t seem like a good idea,” Ford said to the press in February 2020. “But we’ll see new developments in his life, his relationship. We’ll see part of his history resolved.” Disney has plans to go further with Indiana Jones beyond a fifth film with now ex-CEO Bob Iger saying in 2016, "Right now, we're focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort." Spielberg similarly said in 2018 that, “This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure, but it will certainly continue after that."
