Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald director David Yates has spoken out about the controversial decision to keep Jonny Depp on for the sequel.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Yates defended the decision to have Depp play Grindelwald in the sequel, which has garnered backlash because Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, previously accused the actor of both physical and emotional abuse. Yates says these accusations don't tally with the kind of person he's seen while working with the actor.
"Honestly, there's an issue at the moment where there's a lot of people being accused of things, they're being accused by multiple victims, and it's compelling and frightening," said Yates. In the case of Depp, however, Yates noted it was only accusations from a single person. "I can only tell you about the man I see every day: He's full of decency and kindness, and that's all I see," the director said.
