Niantic Labs is currently at work on adding trading to Pokemon Go, but when the feature does eventually arrive, you'll only be able to exchange creatures with other players in your general proximity.
This week at GDC, senior product manager Tatsuo Nomura confirmed to Polygon that trading "won’t be through the internet." Instead, "the person needs to be in your proximity." Nomura explained why this will be the case, saying, "you shouldn’t be able to exchange your Pokemon with someone who is 100 miles away from you."
While trading is expected to come to Pokemon Go sometime later this year, Niantic is still exploring how best to implement the feature. "We're still trying to come up with an answer
