Jordan Peele to Produce Remake of the People Under the Stairs

Jordan Peele is reportedly teaming up with Universal Pictures to produce a remake of Wes Craven's 1991 cult classic The People Under the Stairs. According to Collider, Peele is on board to produce the remake for Universal alongside Win Rosenfeld via their Monkeypaw Productions banner. Peele previously directed Get Out and Us for Universal, though he is not expected to sit in the director's chair on this occasion. It is not currently known whether Peele and Rosenfeld will contribute to the script for the horror film, as they did in co-writing the forthcoming Candyman reboot alongside director Nia DaCosta. Wes Craven's thoughtful blend of horror and psychology frequently had a political angle, but never more so than in The People Under the Stairs. The original film starred Brandon Adams as "Fool," a young black boy who breaks into the house of his corrupt landlords, only to get trapped in their insulated, religiously oppressive, incestuous and violent world of madness, where those who don't follow the rules are brutally punished by "Mommy" (Wendy Robie) and "Daddy" (Everett McGill). Craven was said to be working on three projects prior to his death, one of which included a television series of The People Under the Stairs for the SyFy Channel. Though the show never moved forward, it was described as "Downton Abbey meets Amityville Horror." Craven's Scream franchise is also getting a new lease of life, with a new installment of the slasher film series currently in production. Scream 5 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 14, 2022, which is almost 11 years after Scream 4 was released and about 25 years after the original Scream. Craven said in 2011 that the producers of Scream 4 envisioned the film to be the start of a trilogy, however, the fifth film is being branded as a "relaunch" of the franchise.
