Dr. Seuss' Oh, The Places You'll Go Movie Announced, Produced by JJ Abrams

Dr. Seuss is coming back to the big screen with multiple Cat in the Hat movies and a J.J. Abrams-produced Oh, The Places You'll Go. Vanity Fair says that three movies have already been greenlit with the third movie a Cat in the Hat spinoff starring Thing One and Thing Two. The animated movies will come from Warner Animation Group, which is the same studio behind the recently-released Scoob! and The LEGO Movie. The Cat in the Hat movie was originally announced in 2018. Susan Brandt, president of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, said that the "Seuss universe" will "not necessarily" intersect characters across different franchises like the Marvel movies. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/15/scoob-review"] “The Cat in the Hat will not meet the boy in Oh, the Places You’ll Go, nor would the Things go visit the Lorax,” Brandt said. “While it will all feel like part of the Seuss universe, they live in their worlds, and they’re not necessarily going to interact in the same films.” However, Brandt said there is still room for sequels and spinoffs like the Thing One and Thing Two movie. “For the first time we’re not just doing one film for one book," Brandt said. "We’re going to franchise-build beyond the initial story of these books and find out what happens next. I call it stretching the fabric. How far can it go, to go a little bit deeper with our characters.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=scoob-images&captions=true"] The Cat in the Hat will be directed by South Park producer Erica Rivinoja and Disney artist Art Hernandez and is expected to hit theaters in 2024. Thing One and Thing Two is aiming for a 2026 release and Oh, The Places You'll Go isn't planned for release until 2027. Oh, The Places You'll Go will be the first animated movie to come from Abrams and Bad Robot Productions. Bad Robot is currently working with Warner Bros. on a Justice League Dark TV series and a TV series based on the hotel from The Shining. The Cat in the Hat was previously adapted into a movie in 2003. It was a live-action movie starring Mike Myers in a cat suit and it bombed at the box office after it was roasted by critics. Dr. Seuss' widow hated the movie so much that she said she would never allow one of her late husband's books to be adapted into a live-action movie ever again. Since then, the creators of Ice Age brought Horton Hears a Who to the big screen in 2008 and the studio behind the Despicable Me movies adapted The Lorax in 2012 and The Grinch in 2018. Netflix recently adapted Green Eggs and Ham as a TV series, which has been renewed for season 2. The developer of that series, Jared Stern, will be an executive producer on The Cat in the Hat movie. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-delayed-movie-due-to-coronavirus-so-far&captions=true"] The IGN review for Scoob! gave the movie a 7 out of 10 calling it "earnest and entertaining." Warner Animation Group is providing animation for the upcoming live-action Tom and Jerry movie and the Space Jam sequel, the latter of which recently showed off the new jersey that Lebron James will wear in the movie. The animation studio is also developing a fully-animated DC Super Pets movie. Twitch Offers New Soundtrack Library After DMCA Takedowns

Last month Twitch streamers found themselves hit with a wave of DMCA takedown requests for clips that feature licensed music. For creators with hundreds of clips saved featuring various music in the background, this became a huge headache as they were asked to manually remove violating clips, which for some could be as many as hundreds of videos saved.

What Is DMCA?

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a federal law that’s become quite infamous with the rise of social media services, particularly YouTube. Essentially, it gives the copyright owners the ability to call out unlicensed use of its products and request they be taken down. While YouTube creators are familiar with the DMCA Twitch’s situation is unique in that the requests seem to come all at once, very quickly. Twitch’s official Support account acknowledged the takedown requests, but simply advised users to remove those clips. For users with large archives, Twitch says it’s “working to make this easier.”

Twitch’s DMCA Guidelines

Twitch’s guidelines on DMCA states that “It is our policy to respond to clear notices of claimed copyright infringement that fully comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. In addition, we will promptly terminate without notice the accounts of those determined by us to be “repeat infringers”.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ninja-career-highlights&captions=true"]

How Does DMCA Affect Streamers?

The DMCA is infamous, but it’s also misunderstood. The Act primarily protects the interests of the copyright holder while also giving protections to digital platforms that would previously be liable for hosting copyrighted content that was uploaded without their knowledge. “Most people think of the DMCA as something used against infringers,” says David Hoppe, Managing Partner at SF-based Media/Tech law firm Gamma Law. “But actually DMCA takedown requests are not sent to infringers. DMCA takedown requests are sent by copyright owners to sites that have content posted by users, and that content infringes the copyright. This could be a product review on Amazon, an essay posted on Medium or a YouTube video, for example.” The purpose of the DMCA is to protect those platform owners, like YouTube or Twitch, from liability from the copyright holder, in case a user on the platform posts infringing content. “Any legitimate site will take a takedown request seriously and notify the user to take the content down so that the site will not have the risk of being sued by the copyright owner,” Hoppe says.”

Is there Free Music Twitch Streamers Can Use? Yes.

Twitch has rolled out a new feature called Soundtrack by Twitch which lets creators easily find rights-cleared music that integrates with streaming software. The Soundtrack Library makes it so that streamers can play music on top of their videos without worrying about DMCA Takedowns, because all the songs included has already been cleared legally. A version of the Soundtrack tool is already available for OBS.

What Can Content Creators Do If They’re Hit With a DMCA Takedown Request?

Hoppe says that creators, like streamers, can send a counter-notice through the platform and their content will be put back up. “The copyright owner then has a limited time within which to file a lawsuit against the user. So if the creator gets a counter-notice back, they have to decide quickly whether it’s worth escalating to a lawsuit. Otherwise, the content could just stay up indefinitely.” While platform holders will followthrough with DMCA takedown requests, there are steps creators can take if their content is taken down. However, these extra steps could lead to further litigation. “The [content creator] will have to evaluate the legitimacy of the takedown request. If there is a credible claim that the creator’s content infringes on the other party’s copyright? If there is no credible basis, then the creator should file a counter-notice, and the site will be required to put the content back up. If it’s a closer call and there could be infringement, then the creator should consult a copyright lawyer and make the decision whether to file the counter-notice and possibly wind up in court.” [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt T.M. The Gentlemen: Guy Ritchie Turning His Movie Into a TV Series

Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen is getting a TV series starring Matthew McConaughey. The Gentlemen, which was released in theaters early this year, is about a marijuana grower and dealer named Mickey Pearson (McConaughey) looking to sell his empire and get out of the business forever. A lot unfolds from there as different characters played by Colin Farrell, Henry Golding, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam, and more attempt to make that empire theirs. It seems the story of Mickey Pearson isn't over, though, because Miramax TV is developing a series based on the film and Ritchie will return to direct and write for it, according to a report from Deadline. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/23/the-gentlemen-official-trailer-2"] "Miramax Television is thrilled to break new creative ground in our partnership with Guy Ritchie on The Gentlemen," Miramax Head of Worldwide Television Marc Helwig said. "One for the most distinctive and prolific filmmakers working today and someone whose creativity I have admired for many years, we couldn't be more excited to bring the cinematic journey of The Gentlemen forth into the realm of global premium television." McConaughey and his Mickey Pearson character are set to star in the series with Ritchie writing and directing the episodes. Ritchie will also serve as an executive producer on the show with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, who were also producers on the movie. This move from Miramax TV makes sense considering Miramax produced the film and saw firsthand its profit. With a budget of $22 million, the movie grossed over $115 million in theaters around the world. If you haven't yet seen The Gentlemen, check out the official trailer for the film and then be sure to read our review of The Gentlemen. Hill House S2: The Haunting of Bly Manor Posters Reveal Episode Titles

Netflix has released a series of new posters for The Haunting of Bly Manor, revealing nine episode titles for the second season of Mike Flanagan's horror anthology series, which started out with The Haunting of Hill House. The Haunting Twitter page shared spooky one-sheets for each individual episode of the upcoming season, which is scheduled to hit Netflix on October 9. The distressed posters present ominous images beneath the episode titles. The majority of the posters were tweeted alongside a cryptic message, which we have included in our slideshow. Check out the posters and the episode titles below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-haunting-of-hill-house-season-2-the-haunting-of-bly-manor-episode-titles&captions=true"]
  • Episode 1: The Great Good Place
  • Episode 2: The Pupil
  • Episode 3: The Two Faces Part 1
  • Episode 4: The Way It Came
  • Episode 5: The Altar of the Dead
  • Episode 6: The Jolly Corner
  • Episode 7: The Two Faces Part 2
  • Episode 8: (TBC)
  • Episode 9: The Beast in the Jungle
A two-part episode is included in the new season, with three episodes splitting up the two parts. Interestingly, episode eight's poster features a series of dashes in place of the title, leaving fans trying to fill in the blanks beneath the tweet. Several people suggested that the currently-untitled episode spells out "The Romance of Certain Old Clothes," which is another short gothic horror story by Henry James. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/23/the-haunting-of-bly-manor-official-trailer"] The Haunting of Bly Manor is a loose adaptation of Henry James' 1898 novel The Turn of the Screw, which is widely regarded to be one of the best and most influential horror novels ever written. The novella is narrated by an unnamed protagonist, who recounts the details of a manuscript written by a governess. This manuscript relays the governess' experiences caring for two children at Bly Manor and her slow realization that the grounds may be haunted. The Turn of the Screw has been adapted to film, stage, and TV numerous times, most famously in the form of 1961's The Innocents. WB Interactive President Responds To Ongoing Debate Over Supporting JK Rowling

Warner Bros. Interactive president David Haddad has responded to employee questions around the company's involvement with the work of JK Rowling, following the author's repeated transphobic comments, saying, " I might not agree with her stance on a range of topics, but I can agree that she has the right to hold her opinions." As reported by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier (from a video sent out of an internal meeting), Haddad was asked about the company's association with Rowling after the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy. His response was:
"Not a lot I can comment on, other than, since we did get so many [questions], I wanted to be responsive the best way I could. "The way I think I’d like to do it is, I’d like to echo something you’ve heard from our most senior executive leadership. "While JK Rowling is the creator of Harry Potter, and we are bringing that to life with the power of Portkey, in many places, she’s a private citizen also. And that means she’s entitled to express her personal opinion on social media. I may not agree with her, and I might not agree with her stance on a range of topics, but I can agree that she has the right to hold her opinions."
The statement follows months of controversy around Rowling's views on trans women and gender identity, which have drawn condemnation from the likes of Harry Potter actors Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe among others. Warner Bros. has been drawn into the debate because of its somewhat uncertain connection with Rowling. WB Interactive has a licensing deal in place for Harry Potter, and makes franchise games under the Portkey Games label. While the company has made clear that Rowling is "not directly involved" with Hogwarts Legacy, it has declined to comment on whether the author will receive royalties from the game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/hogwarts-legacy-official-reveal-trailer"] It's led to an ongoing discussion about boycotts for the game, with some arguing that the author's views shouldn't be tacitly supported by buying work associated with her, while others point out the potential negative consequences on the developers of the game (most of whom will have little say on the products they make) if sales are low. It's within the context of this debate that Haddad has been asked for his opinion - and his comments are likely to spark further debate around his company's vested interests in Rowling's work, and the intersection between public opinion and what many consider to be hate speech. Schreier added that, later in the Q&A, Haddad answered a question specifically about diversity and inclusion in WB Interactive products, explaining that the company was working with LGBTQ organisations, and he had personally talked to the director of trans media representation at GLAAD. Haddad apparently did not mention Rowling in this context. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Joe Skrebels is IGN's Executive Editor of News. Follow him on Twitter. Have a tip for us? The Sandman: Netflix Series Reportedly Casts Tom Sturridge as Dream

Tom Sturridge is reportedly in talks to appear as Dream in the Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. Collider reports that Sturridge has been tapped for the lead role in The Sandman after beating out Tom York (Poldark) and Colin Morgan (Merlin) at the testing stage of the casting process earlier this year. An official confirmation of the cast is expected to be announced very soon, as Gaiman revealed on Twitter this week that production is scheduled to start on the series in three weeks time. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/04/03/11-times-dc-movies-improved-on-the-comics"] Sturridge most recently starred in the Starz series Sweetbitter, which is an adaptation of Stephanie Danler's 2016 novel of the same name. In recent years, he's played Jon Dondon in Dan Gilroy's Netflix movie Velvet Buzzsaw and Lord Byron in Haifaa al-Mansour's biographical drama Mary Shelley. Sturridge's earlier credits include Far from the Madding Crowd, On the Road, and Pirate Radio. Being cast as Dream in The Sandman would be another major role for the actor. The Sandman revolves around Dream (AKA Morpheus), who is the living embodiment of dreams and a member of a family known as The Endless. Morpheus is nearly as old as existence itself, coming into being when the first lifeforms began dreaming. He draws strength from dreams and has the ability to shape them to his will. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=14-comics-that-defined-dcs-vertigo-imprint&captions=true"] Netflix officially confirmed its Sandman series in June 2019. The series was said to be making steady progress before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit, which halted production. The show has an 11-episode order at Netflix, with Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg serving as showrunner. He'll also executive produce alongside Gaiman and David Goyer, and all three will co-write the first episode. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Next DLC Fighters Are Minecraft Characters

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will add Minecraft's Steve, Alex, Zombie, and Enderman as upcoming DLC fighters. Revealed in an online presentation today, the fighters will be the second Challenger Pack in the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 (following Arms' Min-Min), and will appear alongside a Minecraft-themed stage that can seemingly change each time it's loaded. Steve's abilities seemingly include the use of in-game crafting to create swords, pickaxes, blocks and other familiar elements from Minecraft. It appears that Alex, Zombie and Enderman will be echo fighters for Steve. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/01/super-smash-bros-ultimate-minecraft-reveal-trailer"] Series creator Masahiro Sakurai explained that the process of creating Minecraft characters is more difficult than you'd expect, explaining that while the design, look, movement and sound were simple enough, but that the programming work is a "massive challenge". All the existiung stages were also reworked to allow blocks to be placed in them. Sakurai will present a second broadcast, 'Fighting with Steve & Alex' on October 3 at 7:30am Pacific / 10:30am Eastern / 3:30pm UK. That broadcast will include the characters' release date. Fan Gets Skyrim to Run on a Keyboard's Tiny Display Screen

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been playable on many, many formats, but a fan has managed something new, by getting the game to run on their keyboard's tiny display screen. Courtesy of Reddit user Mr_Murdoc, you can see how the iconic opening scene of Skyrim looks when rendered in monochrome on a keyboard's OLED screen. Mr_Murdoc used a SteelSeries Apex 7 TKL keyboard to achieve the feat, which comes fitted with a small OLED display that can be modified using the SteelSeries Engine app. [caption id="attachment_2415091" align="alignnone" width="1920"]A shot of Skyrim running on the keyboard screen. Watch the video on Reddit. A shot of Skyrim running on the keyboard screen. Watch the video on Reddit.[/caption] Mr_Murdoc added in a reply that the game itself is running on a connected computer, using a script from GitHub that mirrors the user's desktop screen to the keyboard's OLED display to achieve the effect. Skyrim running natively on a keyboard seems absurd, of course, but given Bethesda's penchant for ports... never say never. Bethesda boss Todd Howard famously said in 2018 that if fans want the studio to stop releasing Skyrim ports, they should "stop buying them." In other Bethesda news, Zenimax Media was recently acquired by Microsoft, bringing franchises like Dishonored, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Fallout and The Elder Scrolls under the wing of Xbox. Check out our video wondering whether Bethesda games will be Xbox exclusives going forward. The real question we're left with is whether this is more impressive than the fan that got Doom running on a pregnancy test. Windows 10 Adding a Task Manager Dedicated to Gaming

Windows 10 is adding a Task Manager widget within the Xbox Game Bar to help you manage your computer's resources without leaving a game. As spotted by WindowsCentral, the new 'Resources' widget lets you monitor which programs are causing the most strain on your computer, assess why your in-game performance may be hitching and close programs quickly without tabbing out. You'll also be able to see how much load there is on your CPU, RAM, DISK and GPU, much like the traditional Task Manager application. It's a neat timesaver that means you won't have to alt-tab or hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE so often to figure out your in-game issues.   [caption id="attachment_241507" align="aligncenter" width="720"]image (1) The Windows 10 Task Manager Bar in action.[/caption] You can get access to the feature right now by enrolling in the Game Bar - SDK Development app within the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows 10. Borat 2: First Promotional Image Released, Amazon Prime Release Date Confirmed

Borat 2 will be released on Amazon Prime on October 23rd, as shown off (among other things) in a new promotional image. The film – which sadly may not be called Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan – got a startling first promotional image on Twitter, with Borat himself encouraging mask use amid the pandemic, in exactly the way you'd expect/fear: Borat 2 has appeared out of nowhere, with the first reports about the film appearing when members of the public saw star Sacha Baron Cohen filming in LA. Since then, it's emerged that the film has already been screened. Speculation had contended that the film would be released ahead of the US election in an attempt to reach younger voters, a theory supported by the October 23 date. The movie has been filmed internationally, with those involved saying Cohen had "risked his life multiple times to shoot the scenes in this film", requiring a bulletproof vest in some locations. Plot details, co-stars, and the inevitable appearance of famous people who don't know they're part of a spoof have not yet been announced.
