WWE 2K Battlegrounds isn't just bringing a different look and feel to the mainline WWE 2K wrestling sims, it's also bringing a story-based campaign. Speaking to IGN, executive producer Sean O'Connor explained that the spin-off game's Campaign mode will see legendary WWE agent Paul Heyman on the search for the next WWE Superstar, with help from 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin. Players will pick from 7 new hopefuls - specially designed for the game - and compete to earn a contract across multiple maps and arenas. "It's told through these really cool comics, "says O'Connor, "and you take them through trying to earn a contract, and eventually get to Wrestlemania." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/08/wwe-2k-battlegrounds-first-gameplay-details"] O'Connor adds that the mode isn't just a linear set of matches: "I can't even remember exactly how many matches and nodes there are - it's kind of a branching thing. There's some things you can do off on the side and earn different rewards, or you can just do the golden path straight through the middle to finish it sooner if you want." Playing the campaign will earn you new elements to use throughout the rest of the game, too. Per O'Connor: "We unlock a lot of arenas, vanity items for your created characters, different power-ups, things like that as you go along through the campaign." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=wwe-2k-battlegrounds&captions=true"] As for what the game will actually play like along the way, Battlegrounds will mix familiar wrestling moves with slightly wilder moves and even power-ups like Flaming Fist, Ice Breath, and an Earthquake that can destroy the ring itself. The game takes inspiration from WWE All-Stars, among other WWE games over the years. "We're trying to be over-the-top, arcadey, easy to pick up and play," explains O'Connor. "A lot of stuff to master, though, so you can really take your game to the next level. It goes very much with the art style [...] where it's kind of a wider appeal - it's clearly not realistic, right? And our moves are not realistic, as you've seen. Think about throwing somebody into a crocodile! That's not very realistic, but it's super fun and it's super over the top, and the power ups play really well into that as well." WWE 2K Battlegrounds will come to PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4 and Stadia on September 18. We learned that release date, and a lot more new details today. Xbox Reportedly Tells Developers That Next-Gen Upgrades Should Be Free
A report has surfaced that suggests Xbox is telling third-party developers that Xbox Series X upgrades of their current-gen games should be free. VGC, which cites "publishing sources with knowledge of Microsoft's next-gen policies," says that Microsoft has been encouraging "companies working on cross-gen games" to offer upgrades at no additional cost. This could make use of Xbox's Smart Delivery program, where you only need to purchase one version of a game to enjoy it across the entire Xbox hardware range. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/15/xbox-smart-delivery-in-depth-with-microsofts-jason-ronald"] So far we've seen that third-party games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077 will offer next-gen upgrades at no extra cost, but this push from Microsoft will attempt to stop other publishers and developers from charging full-price for next-gen versions of cross-gen games, or for an upgrade to be provided as a paid DLC option. EA is offering games under a different Dual Entitlement scheme, which is making sure players who buy FIFA 21 or Madden NFL 21 on current-gen consoles will also be able to play upgraded versions on Xbox Series X and PS5 at no extra cost, should they make the jump in hardware. Microsoft has not made free next-gen upgrades mandatory yet, so if developers don't adopt the Smart Delivery policy, they have other options, such as selling "cross-gen bundles" of Xbox One and Xbox Series X games at a higher price point. We've already seen that NBA 2K21 will a cross-gen bundle option, although its standalone Xbox Series X and PS5 editions will come in at a $69.99 price point. Peter Pan: Jude Law in Talks to Play Captain Hook in Disney's Live-Action Film
Jude Law is reportedly in talks to join Disney's live-action film Peter Pan & Wendy as the classic villain Captain Hook. According to Variety, director David Lowery has tapped Law to board the Jolly Roger and set sail for Neverland in the studio's upcoming live-action Peter Pan adaptation, Peter Pan & Wendy. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/05/29/peter-pan-exclusive-clip-from-65th-anniversary-edition"] If Law signs the parchment for the role, he will follow in the buccaneering footsteps of Dustin Hoffman in 1991's Hook, Jason Issacs in 2003's Peter Pan, and Garrett Hedlund in 2015's Pan, to play the dastardly antagonist on the big screen since Disney has reportedly set its sights on a theatrical release for the Peter Pan film, rather than a Disney+ debut like 2019's Lady and the Tramp remake. As Captain Hook, Law would be creating terror on the high seas for Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson who have been tapped to star as Peter and Wendy in the live-action film. Molony is set to add a feather to his cap, both literally and figuratively, starring as the eternally youthful Lost Boys leader while Anderson is expected to embark on the fantastical adventure as the eldest Darling child. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-upcoming-disney-live-action-remake&captions=true"] Peter Pan & Wendy will be directed by David Lowery and produced by Jim Whitaker, with a script co-written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. Lowery and Halbrooks previously worked together on Disney's remake of Pete's Dragon. The 2016 version of Pete's Dragon fared well with critics and audiences alike. IGN awarded the film a high score, calling it a "beautiful new take on a beloved film" with a "great cast, a believable dragon and beautiful cinematography." Watch Dogs: Legion Images Leak Ahead Of Ubisoft Event
A series of images from Watch Dogs: Legion have leaked, offering a glimpse at the game in action. An Imgur link featuring four images from the game was posted to the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit by user joelioio. According to the post, they stem from recent media previews of the game and, as such, they may look blurry due to the gameplay being streamed from Ubisoft computers.
We can see the game's Team menu screen in the leaks, which shows a series of operatives that the player can swap between as part of their legion of NPCs, with each one having different abilities. One character shown, Phil Ahuja, is a Football Hooligan who can use a Rally Cry ability to call his friends to fight and boasts a Tough Drunk ability that mitigates damage. A Spy character, Brian Casey, is shown in another screenshot, who offers a Spy Watch that can jam enemy weapons, a silenced pistol and a car with cloaking capabilities. One of the images from the game lacks the UI and features a user-drawn ring around a background asset which features the date "16 SEPT." It's unclear why it has been circled, but some think it could be a potential release date for the game. The final image sees the player distracting an Albion police officer while in disguise - par for the course as far as Watch Dogs gameplay is concerned. Little of this is new information - we know that Legion will see players recruiting characters from among the AI population of a future London - but it's a nice reminder of how wildly different the game could be fore different players, given we're seeing football hooligans and old-school spies sharing screen space.
We'll be seeing and hearing more about Watch Dogs: Legion during the Ubisoft Forward conference, which arrives this Sunday, July 12. For more details on the event, check out our article covering the event's lineup. It's Ubisoft's second leak this week, after Assassin's Creed: Valhalla saw 30 minutes of gameplay hit the internet. Donkey Kong Country Leads July 2020's Nintendo Switch Online Games
July 2020's Nintendo Switch Online Games are the SNES' Donkey Kong Country and Natsume Championship Wrestling, and NES' The Immortal. Announced by Nintendo, these games will be available to all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on July 15, 2020. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/08/nintendo-switch-online-july-2020-game-updates"] Donkey Kong Country is one of the high-profile SNES games, alongside Final Fantasy III (VI!), and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, that have appeared on other Nintendo's Virtual Console and the Super Nintendo Classic but had not yet made it to Switch Online. Originally released in 1994, Donkey Kong Country starred Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong as they worked to take down the evil King K. Rool and the Kremlings. In our review of its Wii Virtual Console port, we said that even though some of "your nostalgic feelings may take a hit" when replaying it, "DKC's gameplay is still a lot of fun." In a special "Classified Information" video by Nintendo, it reveals some secrets players can use when playing the game, including "Diddy's Extra Lives, Start with 50 Lives, Bonus Area Practice, and 101% Completion?!" [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/08/donkey-kong-country-classified-information-nintendo-switch-online"] Natsume Championship Wrestling was also released in 1994 and allows players to step into the ring with one of 12 fighters. It's not a licensed game, but features such characters as the massively powerful Asteroid, the lightning-fast Viper, and the underhanded-attacker Phantom. The Immortal was released on NES in 1991 and has you take on the role of a young wizard who is on a quest to find his missing mentor. You must head down into a labryinth and face eight levels of "deadly action, filled 50 chambers of horror, danger, and deception in the form of traps, undead monster, and other vile creatures." If you loved Donkey Kong Country, be sure to check out Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on Nintendo Switch, which made it on our list of Best Switch Games. In our review, we said "the new Funky Mode for Tropical Freeze on Switch makes it more approachable without turning this amazing platformer into a cakewalk." Tom Cruise Got a Stress Zit on His Nose Filming M:I 2 Scene
Tom Cruise got so stressed out during the "nightmare" filming of Mission: Impossible II that he developed a zit on his nose over the course of filming one key scene, according to his co-star Thandie Newton. In a DGAF interview with Vulture, Newton recalled she was "scared" of Cruise making the 2000 action sequel, calling him "a very dominant individual. He tries super hard to be a nice person. But the pressure. He takes on a lot. And I think he has this sense that only he can do everything as best as it can be done." Newton said Cruise "wasn't horrible" and that he was just "really stressed. I had the most extraordinary time." But there was one particular sequence that proved "a nightmare" to film, according to Newton. The actress recalled that during an action scene set on a balcony, Cruise was particularly unhappy with Newton's approach to it, which she attributes to her character, thief Nyah Nordoff-Hall, having "the shittiest lines" in the script. [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://ift.tt/3e47aND] With director John Woo not on set -- Newton said he was downstairs directing from a monitor and had, as Newton puts it, decided at the beginning of the shoot "that he didn't speak English" -- Cruise rehearsed the intense scene with her repeatedly, finally deciding to swap lines and rehearse and shoot the entire scene that way. "So we filmed the entire scene with me being him — because, believe me, I knew the lines by then — and him playing me,” Newton recalled. “And it was the most unhelpful . . . I can’t think of anything less revealing. It just pushed me further into a place of terror and insecurity.” Newton, however, also said, "bless him" because Cruise "was trying his damnedest" to make the scene work. The shooting of this scene became so stressful for Cruise that he rapidly developed a distracting pimple on his nose. [caption id="attachment_2376918" align="alignnone" width="720"]
"Be honest. Is it noticeable?" "No, Tom, no one will ever nose it's there."[/caption] “I remember at the beginning of the night, seeing this slight red mark on his nose, and by the end of the night, I kid you not — this is how his metabolism is so fierce — he had a big whitehead where that red dot was,” Newton revealed. “It would take anyone else 48 hours to manifest a zit. And it was like the zit was me, just getting bigger and bigger.” They ended up reshooting the whole scene the following week to get exactly what Cruise wanted from Newton. "He just wanted this alpha bitch,” she said. “And I did as best as I could. It’s not the best way to get the best work out of someone.” Unlike other actors in the series, Newton said she was never asked back for another Mission: Impossible sequel. Twenty years later and Tom Cruise is still playing IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Mission: Impossible 7 aims to resume production soon after production was shut down due to the pandemic.

Roguebook Is a New Roguelike Deck-Builder From Magic Creator
Belgian game developer Abrakam announced a new roguelike deck-builder game titled Roguebook. Furthermore, it’s been designed with the help of Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield. Roguebook is a new roguelike deck-builder similar where players will progress through a dungeon and build up a deck of cards that will serve as the basis for the character’s strength and powers. Players begin with two heroes and build a deck of powers around them. If both heroes die, players must start over from the beginning. As players traverse an overworld, they'll fight more enemies, earn more cards based on their defeated foe, and eventually craft a powerful deck that suits their needs. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=roguebook-screenshots&captions=true"] Roguelikes are a new genre for Nacon, a French publisher behind titles like Werewolf: The Apocalypse Earthblood and Warhammer Chaosbane. In addition to Roguebook, Nacon announced a second roguelike called Rogue Lords developed by Cyanide and Leikir. In addition to Roguebook, Nacon revealed the first look gameplay for Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and a cinematic trailer for Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong. Note, Swansong is a separate project from Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2. For more from today’s Nacon Connect, check out IGN. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Mafia: Definitive Edition has been delayed by a month, from August 28 to September 25. Developer Hangar 13 explains that the delay has been caused by difficulties caused by working amid the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sega Announces a Miniature Arcade Cabinet With 36 Games Included
Sega has announced a miniature arcade cabinet, scheduled for Japanese release only, which will ship with 36 games included. Sega's been celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and the celebrations continue with the announcement of the Astro City Mini. This miniature arcade cabinet - which fits in your hand - comes with 36 Sega arcade titles and is set to release later this year, according to Game Watch, as translated by Sega Driven. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=sonic-the-hedgehog-all-the-easter-eggs-and-hidden-references-from-the-movie&captions=true"] As for what games to expect on the device, Sega has announced just 10 of the three dozen expected to ship with it: Alien Syndrome, Alien Storm, Altered Beast, Columns II, Dark Edge, Fantasy Zone, Golden Axe, Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, Tant R, and Virtua Fighter. It's unknown if more titles or the entire selection will be announced before the cabinet is released. The cabinet is an off-white color and features a bright green eight-way joystick and six arcade buttons on a black background. You can check out what the mini system looks like below.
Sega said that each game will be playable in its original format and can be played either on the cabinet's screen or on a TV through an HDMI hookup. The system must be connected to a micro USB electrical connection in order to turn on, and it features an additional two USB slots for those wishing to connect more joysticks to the system. When turned on, the cabinet features a mini marquee that lights up. No word has been given as to whether this cabinet is set to release outside of Japan. It will be available by the end of the year for 12,800 yen, which is currently equal to around $118. Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning: Slight Delay, New DLC Expansion Announced
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning has gotten a short delay, and will now be released for PC, Xbox One and PS4 on September 8. The remaster of the 2012 game will also be getting a brand new DLC expansion, Fatesworn, in 2021. Originally scheduled for August 18, this marks only a short delay to the remaster, which includes all the original DLC, including Teeth of Naros and Legend of Dead Kel, and will have "improved graphical fidelity." Besides a new trailer (below), publisher THQ Nordic hasn't offered any details on the new Fatesworn expansion, only promising that details will come at a later date. However, a tagline – "What does the future hold for the Fateless One?" – suggests that the new content could be set after the events of the main game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/07/kingdoms-of-amalur-re-reckoning-announcement-trailer"] THQ Nordic has also announced a Fate Edition of the game, which will offer Fatesworn as part of a bundle with the main game, and a Collector's Edition, which includes a figuring, keychain, artwork, soundtrack, and collector's box. It's a major turnaround for Amalur's fortunes. The game originally reviewed well, but dveeloper 38 Studios went out of business shortly after release, and founder Curt Schilling was even (unsuccessfully) sued by the state of Rhode Island. At the time, the company wanted to make an Amalur MMO, among other projects. THQ Nordic bought the rights to the game in 2018. Retro Digital Timex x Pac-Man Watches Now Available
UPDATE 7/7/2020: The Timex T80 x PAC-MAN watches are now available to order from Timex' website. In the age of smartphones and Apple Watch, a classic digital watch is retro without even trying. Timex has combined two great retro flavors together in a limited-edition run of its classic T80 line by combining it with the 1980s gaming goodness that is Pac-Man. The Timex T80 x PACMAN line comes in three different styles, each with stainless steel watchbands and water resistance up to 50m. Originally introduced at ComplexCon in Long Beach, CA last November, the watches go back on sale July 7 in the US, with global distribution coming sometime in August. Check out the gallery below to see this doubly-retro watch. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=timex-t80-x-pacman-limited-edition-watch&captions=true"] The watch comes in three different colors: black, silver, and gold, and the face is decorated to celebrate 40 years of Pac-Man. There's a pixelated Pac-Man chasing a ghost monster embossed in the clasp of the stainless steel band. In addition to all the normal features you find in the Timex T80 watch, like stopwatch, Indiglo lighting, and an alarm, this special-edition watch plays the "iconic PAC-MAN melody" too. You'll be able to order your own from Timex on July 7 for $79 in the US. If you're curious: yes, I am setting a reminder on my phone so I can order one for myself. I just can't decide which color.
