Retro Digital Timex x Pac-Man Watches Now Available

UPDATE 7/7/2020: The Timex T80 x PAC-MAN watches are now available to order from Timex' website. In the age of smartphones and Apple Watch, a classic digital watch is retro without even trying. Timex has combined two great retro flavors together in a limited-edition run of its classic T80 line by combining it with the 1980s gaming goodness that is Pac-Man. The Timex T80 x PACMAN line comes in three different styles, each with stainless steel watchbands and water resistance up to 50m. Originally introduced at ComplexCon in Long Beach, CA last November, the watches go back on sale July 7 in the US, with global distribution coming sometime in August. Check out the gallery below to see this doubly-retro watch. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=timex-t80-x-pacman-limited-edition-watch&captions=true"] The watch comes in three different colors: black, silver, and gold, and the face is decorated to celebrate 40 years of Pac-Man. There's a pixelated Pac-Man chasing a ghost monster embossed in the clasp of the stainless steel band. In addition to all the normal features you find in the Timex T80 watch, like stopwatch, Indiglo lighting, and an alarm, this special-edition watch plays the "iconic PAC-MAN melody" too. You'll be able to order your own from Timex on July 7 for $79 in the US. If you're curious: yes, I am setting a reminder on my phone so I can order one for myself. I just can't decide which color. Ex-Bungie Exec Says Activision Deal Was 'Bad From the Start', Destiny Nearly Went to Microsoft

Ex-Bungie board member and composer Marty O'Donnell has given his take on the Destiny deal Bungie had with Activision - which lasted from 2010 to 2019 - calling it "bad from the start." In an interview with Halo Youtuber HiddenXperia, O'Donnell explained that he was part of the board of directors who made the initial decision back in 2010, but that it wasn't "a marriage made in heaven." "We knew it was a risk right from the get-go, and then it turned out to be exactly as we thought it was going to be," O'Donnell explained. "Everybody who no longer works for Bungie is gonna say, 'Yeah, it was bad from the start.'" He added that those still at Bungie who say that the partnership worked are being "political". "That's BS," he explains. "There are so many scripted answers out there that I hear." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/01/10/bungie-splits-with-activision-will-keep-destiny-rights"] Later in the interview O'Donnell shares an anecdote about a dinner with Activision executives before the partnership deal had been signed. During the dinner, O'Donnell says he was talking to the Activision CFO about a saying, "Be nice to the goose," (with Bungie being the goose laying golden eggs for Activision). According to O'Donnell, the CFO told him that he liked the analogy, "but sometimes there's nothing like a good Foie Gras" (the controversial food made by force-feeding geese before slaughter). "I get a chill even telling that story," says O'Donnell, "the red flag went off!" Bungie split from Activision in January 2019 after a nearly ten-year partnership that produced Destiny and Destiny 2, allowing Bungie to retain full publishing rights for the franchise. O'Donnell himself was fired without cause from Bungie in 2014, and successfully sued the company for damages. In the interview, he puts that firing down to his problems with Activision's control over the Destiny IP: "The reason why we went with Activision was not just the money, but it was because as part of the contract, they didn't own the IP," something that O'Donnell explains was non-negotiable after the developer's famous separation from Microsoft. He claims that, despite the terms of that agreement, Activision was allowed to mould the IP due to the actions of Bungie leadership. "Activision not only didn't have the legal right to mess with the IP, but the only way they would be prevented from messing with the IP is if all the leadership at Bungie said you can't mess with the IP. And that's not what happened. And that's why they fired me," O'Donnell told HiddenXperia. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/08/21/destiny-2-launch-trailer"] Interestingly, O'Donnell adds that other publishers, including Microsoft, were in the running to partner with Bungie during this process, but none of them would allow Bungie to retain the IP as Activision did. In fact, O'Donnell mentioned that Bungie "almost went back to Microsoft" after becoming independent in 2007. In other Bungie news, the studio's new IP will apparently be "comedic" and feature "whimsical characters" according to a job listing. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: Babu Frik's Tech Was Inspired by the Game Boy

Star Wars concept artist Matthew Savage has shared a design sketch of Babu Frik's workshop for The Rise of Skywalker, which reveals a piece of technology inspired by the Nintendo Game Boy. Savage shared the concept art on Instagram alongside two further images of Babu Frik's "hack terminal" device, as he teased how this particular set-piece was "possibly inspired by a Nintendo Game Boy." The design of the computer prop appears to draw some real-world inspiration from the classic version of the Nintendo Game Boy, with its grey, softly-rounded rectangular unit, green-coloured screen, dark grey keys, adjustable side dial controls, and two red lights that seemingly mirror the magenta game buttons on the handheld console. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=star-wars-40-pieces-of-obscure-trivia&captions=true"] Interestingly, this isn't the only Easter egg hidden within the droidsmith's cluttered workshop; some familiar Droids were spotted in the background of the Anzellan's cramped maze of tools and parts, including the head of a 2-1B medical Droid from The Empire Strikes Back and a decommissioned B1 Battle Droid from the Star Wars Prequels. In fact, the final film in the Skywalker saga was jam-packed with Easter eggs, callbacks and references to earlier entries in the long-spanning series -- as well as a number of notable celebrity cameos. For more on those hidden gems, check out our favourite Rise of Skywalker callbacks, references, and nods to classic Star Wars movies, characters, and themes. Blink 182's Mark Hoppus Plays His Own Song In The Last Of Us 2

Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus has covered one of his own songs, Dammit using the simulated in-game guitar in The Last Of Us 2.

While streaming the game on Twitch, Hoppus spent time in the Valiant Bookstore noodling on one of the acoustic guitars Ellie can tinker with throughout the course of the game, and saw him cover Dammit, one of the most popular singles from Blink 182’s 1997 album Dude Ranch.

Hoppus manages to copy the four-chord structure from the strong by strumming on the DualShock’s touchpad, using the right stick to switch between the different chords in time with the tune. He also has a little sing-song to accompany his strumming (though he does need to ask the Twitch chat for the rest of the lyrics at one point).

As part of a merch drop to accompany the launch of the game, Sony collaborated with guitar company Taylor to create a set of custom instruments, including one that replicates Ellie’s in-game guitar and another that features Ellie’s tattoo as a motif.

The proper replica will run you $2,300, but bear in mind that that’s not so distant from the regular price range for Taylor guitars of this kind. For more on The Last Of Us 2, check out our guide to every collectable in the game.

Mad Max: Charlize Theron on 'Heartbreaking' Recasting of Furiosa

While Mad Max: Fury Road is getting a prequel, Charlize Theron won't be reprising her role as the heroic Imperator Furiosa. And Theron has now spoken about how she feels handing the reins to another actress. Theron revealed her conflicted feelings about the prequel during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where she describes allowing another actress to take up the mantle of Furiosa as "a little heartbreaking." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/26/furiosa-the-new-mutants-anya-taylor-joy-reportedly-up-for-mad-max-spin-off"] “It’s a tough one to swallow. Listen, I fully respect George [Miller], if not more so in the aftermath of making Fury Road with him. He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best," Theron told THR. “Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner. We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we’re focusing on.” As we learned back in March, Miller is currently casting the prequel with the intent of shooting in 2021. New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy is rumored to be a frontrunner for the role of a younger Furiosa. Miller has been planning a Furiosa prequel for several years at this point, first hinting at the idea mere months after the release of Fury Road. "She's a pretty compelling character so it'd be great to tell her story," Miller told Entertainment Weekly in 2016. "Her backstory is pretty interesting, we only allude to it in this movie. This movie is on the run, people don't have much time for recreational talk. You have a sense of her having gone through stuff, that's what the movie is trying to do. You know, you're trying to put a lot of iceberg under the tip, I like saying." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-sci-fi-movies&captions=true"] The good news is that Theron continues to appear in other big-budget action movies. She's next appearing in Netflix's comic book adaptation The Old Guard, which debuts on the streamer on Friday, July 10. You can check out IGN's advance review of The Old Guard for more on the new movie. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. IGN Nominated for 3 L.A. Press Club SoCal Journalism Awards

IGN is pleased to announce that three of its writers are among the nominees for the L.A. Press Club's 62nd Annual Southern California Journalism Awards. Reporter Matt Kim was nominated in the category of Online: Entertainment News (Music/Performers) for his November 2019 piece "Blizzcon Protesters Share Why They're Fighting For Free Speech at Blizzard's Big Event." Written in the wake of Blizzard's decision to punish Hearthstone player Ng Wai "Blitzchung" Chung following his public support of the Hong Kong protests, the piece explores how many Blizzcon attendees sought to protest Blizzard's decision and raise awareness of the situation in Hong Kong. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-blizzard-china-controversy-explained&captions=true"] Editor/producer Joshua Yehl was nominated in the category of Entertainment Commentary (Film/TV) for his December 2019 essay "How I Learned to Grieve and Heal Through Star Wars." Inspired by the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and its inclusion of the franchise's first on-screen, same-sex kiss, Yehl offers a personal account of how that Star Wars milestone helped him process the grief surrounding the death of his friend Drew Leinonen, who was among those killed at the 2016 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Freelance writer Siddhant Adlakha was nominated in the "Criticism of TV" category for his series of reviews of HBO's Watchmen. Adlakha scored the eighth episode of Watchmen a 10, writing "Watchmen’s penultimate episode is a thermodynamic miracle. An expertly crafted piece of television that positions us in past and present simultaneously, while exploring what makes Dr. Manhattan human — and therefore, what makes the rest of us. A story of doomed romance, of sacrifice, and of what it feels like to remember falling in love." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/16/watchmen-season-finale-review-what-to-watch"] The full list of award nominees was released on Monday. Chris Hemsworth to Get Bigger Than Thor to Play Hulk Hogan

As impressive as Chris Hemsworth's muscles are in most of the MCU movies (Avengers: Endgame notwithstanding), fans haven't seen anything yet. According to Hemsworth himself, he's working on bulking up more than ever before as he prepares to play the part of pro wrestler Hulk Hogan. Hemsworth discussed his upcoming role in the upcoming Hogan biopic with Total Film (via ComicBook.com), describing the gig as "insanely physical." "This movie is going to be a really fun project," Hemsworth said. "As you can imagine, the preparation for the role will be insanely physical. I will have to put on more size than I ever have before, even more than I put on for Thor. There is the accent as well as the physicality and the attitude." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/02/20/thors-chris-hemsworth-to-play-hulk-hogan-in-biopic-from-joker-director-todd-phillips-ign-news"] Hemsworth continued, "I will also have to do a deep dive into the rabbit hole of the wrestling world, which I'm really looking forward to doing." Hemsworth previously teased the project back in April, saying it aims to show fans a very different side of the pro wrestling scene. "I'm just fascinated by that world, and I think they're pretty keen to show a side of the world that people haven't seen before," Hemsworth told ScreenRant. "I'm as intrigued as you are." Joker's Todd Phillips is attached to direct the Hulk Hogan biopic, which is being scripted by Joker's Scott Silver along with John Pollono. The movie -- which is expected to be made at Netflix and counts Bradley Cooper among its producers -- will explore Hogan's rise to fame in the 1980s and reportedly won't cover his more recent scandals and lawsuits. IGN named Hulk Hogan No. 3 on our list of the Top 50 wrestlers of all time. Xbox Is Interested in Acquiring Mortal Kombat, Batman Developers

Microsoft is reportedly interested in acquiring Warner Bros. Interactive following the news that parent company AT&T is looking into possibly selling the video game development arm of Warner Bros. However, a sale is not currently imminent. The Information is reporting that, alongside companies like Activision, EA, and Take-Two, Microsoft is interested in acquiring WB Interactive and its several game development studios. Whoever acquires WB Interactive will likely purchase studios like Avalanche Software, Monolith Productions, NetherRealm Studios, Rocksteady Studios, TT Games, and various WB Games studios across the globe. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-batman-video-game-review&captions=true"] It’s important to note that the acquisition of WB Interactive will not mean any of the interested companies like Microsoft or Activision will own characters like Batman or Harry Potter. Instead, potential buyers will have to negotiate licensing deals so studios like Rocksteady can still create new games based on DC Comics or any other Warner Bros. characters. However, certain properties like Mortal Kombat will be included in the sale of NetherRealm Studios. Acquiring WB Interactive will massively increase the number of Xbox Game Studios developers. Microsoft already purchased high-profile developers including Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Double Fine, and more. A WB Interactive purchase will add studios like NetherRealm, and potentially the license to develop DC and Harry Potter games, similar to how Insomniac has the license to develop Spider-man games for PlayStation. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2014/06/03/batman-arkham-knight-batmobile-trailer"] News that AT&T is looking into selling WB Interactive broke last month. The parent company is looking to pay down its $154 billion debt, and a sale of WB Interactive is potentially valued at $4 billion. AT&T purchased Time Warner for $109 billion in 2018 which resulted in the large debt. Investors are calling on the telecommunications company to sell “non-core assets” such as DirecTV and WB Interactive. Meanwhile, WB Montreal is currently working on a new Batman project, while Rocksteady is rumored to be developing a new DC game. Avalanche Studios has also been linked to the unannounced Harry Potter RPG. IGN has reached out to Xbox for a comment. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova May Be the MCU's New Black Widow

While the upcoming Black Widow movie takes place several years ago in the MCU timeline, that doesn't mean it won't have a profound impact on Marvel's movies going forward. Director Cate Shortland reveals the movie will see Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff officially pass the torch to Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova. Shortland revealed as much during an interview with Empire, revealing that the movie is setting up a long-term storyline for Pugh's character. Based on that, Yelena may well be the MCU's designated Black Widow in Phase 4 and beyond. “[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Shortland said. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=who-is-black-widows-yelena-belova&captions=true"] This would seem to discredit our earlier theory that the movie will see Yelena transform into the powerful Super-Adaptoid, as she did in Marvel's comics. Even though the movie takes place in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow will also be focused on wrapping up Natasha's MCU story arc and giving fans closure following the character's heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. “In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral,” Shortland said. “She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.” Black Widow should have arrived in theaters already, but the movie is among numerous Hollywood projects delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It's currently set for release on November 6, 2020, the date previously reserved for Marvel's The Eternals. The good news is that Black Widow's delay won't impact the larger MCU timeline. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/09/black-widow-official-final-trailer"] While we wait for Black Widow's release, see Johansson, Margot Robbie and other stars fight each other in quarantine, and find out how Johansson's salary compares to her Marvel co-stars. Wonder Woman 1984: Mattel Reveals New DC Movie Barbie Dolls

With Gal Gadot and Chris Pine reprising their DCEU roles in the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984, Mattel is introducing new lineup of Barbie dolls based on the new DC movie. These new collector-focused dolls are inspired by several key looks in the sequel, from Diana's traditional costume to her new golden eagle armor to her reunion with Steve in Washington DC. Even Kristen Wiig's Cheetah is included. You can check out all the new designs in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=wonder-woman-1984-mattel-reveals-elaborate-barbie-dolls&captions=true"] The 2-doll Barbie Giftset featuring Diana and Steve is priced at $80 and includes doll stands and a certificate of authenticity. It's expected to go on sale later in July. The remaining WW*4 Barbies will go on sale beginning on July 6. The individual Core Fashion Dolls" are riced at $14.99 each, while the Deluxe Golden Armor and Young Diana and Horse sets are each priced at $29.99. You can order all of these Barbie sets through the official Mattel store or retailers like Amazon and Walmart. Unfortunately, all of these Wonder Woman Barbies will be arriving in stores well before the release of the movie. Like many upcoming film and TV projects affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984's release date has been pushed back. It's currently set for release on October 2, 2020, and there's no guarantee that date won't change again. We're hoping to see a new glimpse of the movie at the upcoming DC FanDome virtual event. Assassin's Creed Valhalla: 30 Minutes of Gameplay Footage Leak

Sure as sun follows rain, Assassin's Creed games will be shown off before Ubisoft want them to be, and today's seen another example for the perennially leaky series, with 30 minutes of gameplay footage making their way onto the internet. Marked with a clear "work in progress" tag (and seemingly uploaded in low resolution), the footage shows a player using the female version of lead character Eivor, and includes:
  • Open world exploration (which looks very similar to AC: Odyssey, although with a colour palette more familiar from The Witcher 3)
  • Raven Sight (which reveals stats for Wealth, Mysteries and Secrets in the area)
  • Longboat gameplay (with players bracing to mitigate damage)
  • Combat amid a full castle siege (the player uses twin axes and a bow in this footage, has two ability wheels mapped to each controller trigger, and can use a battering ram to take down gates in their way)
  • A boss battle that ends in a choice to either execute or spare the victim
  • The game's skill menu (which takes the form of constellations, unlocks across multiple branches, and includes points to be spent on abilities or base stats)
  • A look at the inventory menu (which heavily resembles those in both Origins and Odyssey, albeit seemingly without level requirements on equipment)
  • A button to seemingly enter the game's Animus from the in-game menus (a seeming change from Odyssey's scripted out-of-Animus sections)
  • A seemingly non-regenerating health bar (with the ability to eat berries from the environment to replenish it)
  • A version of Odyssey's absolute best ability, the Spartan Kick, which I'm delighted about
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/30/assassins-creed-valhalla-trailer-breakdown-ign-rewind-theater"] The footage clearly isn't what Ubisoft would have hoped to be the first true gameplay shown to fans, particularly as it contains bugs that seem to affect cuts into and between cutscenes, as well as general visual issues throughout. Multiple versions of the footage have been uploaded and subsequently removed by Ubisoft since it first leaked. With the Ubisoft Forward conference coming this weekend, it seems likely we'll see the intended gameplay at the showcase. Ubisoft has not responded to requests for comment on the source of the footage, or whether it represents the game at its current stage of development. Xbox Series X First-Party Games Showcase Coming on July 23

Xbox has announced that its showcase of first-party Xbox Series X games will be broadcast on July 23 The livestream will begin at 9am Pacific / 12pm Eastern / 5pm UK (that's July 24 at 2am AEST). We know the showcase will be games-focused, and will include showings of new games from the likes of Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Obsidian. We know the show will also include Halo Infinite.   Recent rumours have also centred around the possibility of reveals for Fable 4 (potentially from Playground Games) and a new Perfect Dark (with speculation pointing to mysterious new 'AAAA' Microsoft studio, The Initiative). Those hoping to see the much-rumoured Xbox Series S may be disappointed, with rumours pointing to an August reveal. Xbox previously held a third-party focused showcase in May, which revealed the likes of Scorn, Second Extinction, and more. Some weren't happy with how that showcase played out, which Microsoft recognised, saying it "set some wrong expectations" - hopefully this new showcase has taken that feedback onboard. We'll also be bringing you a daily wrap-up show, an indie showcase, and an awards show:
  • August 28-29 - gamescom Daily Show: Presented by IGN's Michael Swaim, the gamescom Daily Show will wrap up the day's highlights, as well as covering the likes of cosplay, esports, and more.
  • August 29 - gamescom Awesome Indies: In this showcase, we'll be showing off the most exciting games from smaller developers at the show, shining a light on some of the industry's most original projects, and talking them through with their developers.
  • August 30 - gamescom Best Of Show: Closing out gamescom 2020, we'll be handing out the gamescom awards, as well as showing off the results of the yearly cosplay competition.
This year's gamescom is an exclusively digital event, and will be completely free to watch, with no event tickets required. We'll have more info for you on how to watch the show as we get closer to the event. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Joe Skrebels is IGN's Executive Editor of News. Follow him on Twitter.
