Warning! Full SPOILERS follow for Black Panther. Be sure to check out our SPOILER-FREE review right here.
Black Panther’s Erik Killmonger wanted to start a revolution around the world that would help marginalized people fight back against their oppressors, and while I don’t agree with his methods, I understand where the anger comes from. I felt that same rage when I was 12 years old on a trip to Africa.
In 1996, my family and I traveled to West Africa to a small country called The Gambia. My parents were determined to see where our ancestors potentially came from, because the region was known to have been a popular destination for slave traders back in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It was a revelatory experience that I will never forget and thought about constantly while watching Black Panther.
