After a two-week run as box office champ, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was dethroned by Alien: Covenant, which debuted in first place at the domestic box office with an estimated $36 million.
Alien: Covenant's opening is far behind its processor, Prometheus, which had a $51.1 million domestic opening in 2012. The film has made an estimated $81.8 million so far internationally, which, added to its current domestic total, makes for a worldwide come of an estimated $117.8 million.
It's also important to note that, given Covenant's reported $100 million budget, which doesn't include marketing costs, Ridley Scott's new sci-fi horror film has a long way to go before becoming profitable, as movies generally need to make at least two and a half times what they cost to produce to be considered profitable.
