“Cinema lives in wides and closeups.” That’s what Tarkovsky said. Or maybe it was Spielberg. I can’t remember, exactly, but some famous, world-renown filmmaker said something like that sometime, somewhere.
And if you think about it, it makes total sense: that special sense we often get from the movies where the world we see on screen feels bigger and more fantastic, where the stakes are higher, the sacrifices more painful, and the rewards more cathartic -- that feeling that we call cinematic, it comes from a filmmaker’s ability to blend the scale of big sweeping wide shots with the intimacy of close-ups. There are few directors today who do this as masterfully as Christopher Nolan, whose breathtaking full-length trailer for Dunkirk released this morning. Watch it below:
