The Trap: NFL Star Lance Briggs Makes His Comic Book Debut

Former NFL star Lance Briggs is making the jump to comic book writing. Briggs has teamed with co-writer Kyle Higgins (Nightwing) and artist Danilo Beyruth (Man Without Fear: The Death of Daredevil) to create The Trap, a full-length graphic novel inspired by Briggs' own struggle to make it in the world of professional sports. The Trap is a futuristic science fiction story about an aspiring sports star named Jaylen Robinson. Jaylen has the potential to make it big playing the galaxy's favorite pastime, surfriding, but that career is thrown in jeopardy strikes when the cash-strapped athlete steals a senator's car and accidentally shoots him. The creative team also includes colorist Tamra Bonvillain, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and designer Sasha Head. Check out an early preview of The Trap in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-trap-nfl-star-lance-briggs-makes-his-comic-book-debut&captions=true"] “Before I played professional football, my life was very different,” said Briggs in a statement. “I grew up in Sacramento, CA during the 1980s and 1990s, with my mother and two older sisters. But while many people hear 'Sacramento' and associate it with a place of power and decision making in the state of California, the reality— for many of its residents— is anything but. Our family struggled no differently than most in the south area. There were times when the pantry was bare and the fridge was empty. Days or weeks without power. Waking up to cold showers before school. For those of us who came of age in an environment like this, we have a simple name for it: The Trap. Put simply, the name translates to a community that has been failed by its governing bodies. The Trap is both a neighborhood and a resulting way of life— a system designed to keep you from succeeding.” “The best science fiction is allegory,” said Higgins. “And while the world of THE TRAP has many extraordinary elements— technology, sports, species and interstellar status quo— at its core it is very much an opportunity to explore the different challenges that we face, as we try to save those who come after us from repeating our mistakes.” The Trap will be published as a 120-page, oversized hardcover and is currently being offered only through Kickstarter. Backers can buy the digital version for $10 and the hardcover for $40, while higher tiers offer bonuses like exclusive prints from artists like Elsa Charretier and Declan Shalvey. The Trap is expected to ship in August 2021. In other comic book news, we have the scoop on how the Batman franchise will evolve after Joker War and a breakdown of Peacemaker, John Cena's DC character who's getting his own HBO Max series.
