Lightning McQueen is back in Cars 3, but this time he truly seems to have met his match. The newest film in the Cars series finds Lightning sidelined thanks to a frightening crash that occurs when he tries, and fails, to beat the brash young racer named Jackson Storm. Lightning is determined to prove he still has what it takes though, and to face Jackson again – and triumph over him. But can he actually succeed?
With Cars 3 hitting theaters this weekend, I sat down with Owen Wilson (who returns as the voice of Lightning McQueen) and Armie Hammer (who plays Jackson Storm) to discuss the surprisingly deep places the film goes, the popularity the Cars franchise has with kids, and those very elaborate and amusing fan theories on how the Cars universe actually functions.
