Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick will hit theaters earlier than expected this summer. The movie was originally scheduled to premiere on Friday, June 26, giving it the standard opening weekend for the summer blockbuster – but it has now been moved up two days and will release on Wednesday, June 24, as announced by Paramount Pictures. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-10-best-80s-action-movies&captions=true"] Top Gun: Maverick will open in the pre-Independence Day weekend against Warner Bros. Pictures' In the Heights, but it will get a two-day jump on that movie as In the Heights is scheduled for a Friday release that week. Paramount Pictures did not give a reason for the schedule change to Top Gun: Maverick. The Cruise-led movie could face competition in its second weekend, which is Independence Day weekend, as Ryan Reynold's Free Guy hits theaters on July 3. Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel to Cruise's 1986 film, Top Gun, and it sees Cruise reprising the role of Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. Joseph Kosinski is the director for the film and it's not Cruise's first time working with Kosinski, as the two worked together on 2013's Oblivion. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/19/top-gun-maverick-trailer-but-with-danger-zone"] Val Kilmer is reprising his role as Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick and other stars like Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly are attached to the film as well. The film will center on the relationship between Maverick and the son of his co-pilot from the original film, Goose. Whiplash star Miles Teller plays Goose's son and will be Maverick's protege of sorts in the movie. Absent from the cast is Kelly McGillis who played Maverick's love interest, Charlie Blackwood, in the original film. You can catch up on the latest with Top Gun: Maverick by watching the Big Game Spot from last month and the second official trailer released last December. We also got a look at the poster for the film and you might spot the difference in Maverick's jacket between Top Gun: Maverick and the original Top Gun and why that came to be.
