Rod Serling's Planet of the Apes Movie That Could’ve Been

Just about everyone recognizes the iconic, twist ending to the original Planet of the Apes movie -- Charlton Heston shouting at a ruined Statue of Liberty, and by extension, at humanity itself, which he’s finally realized has been lost to the ages and its own penchant for self-destruction. And most fans know that ending was at least in part the work of legendary Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling, a master of the gut-punch twist if ever there was one, and the original writer on the Apes movie.

During the film’s gestation, Serling scripted several drafts of Planet of the Apes, adapting the Pierre Boulle novel, though eventually screenwriter Michael Wilson came in to bring his own spin to the material. But in the 50 years since the film’s release, fans have often wondered how much of Serling’s work remained in the final product. Now, thanks to BOOM! Studios’ Planet of the Apes: Visionaries graphic novel, we have a pretty good idea.
