Stranger Things Season 3 Premiere Date and First Poster Revealed

There's also a new teaser trailer for the upcoming season, featuring the ominous tidings "when blue and yellow meet in the west" cut between footage of the 1985's Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve (brought to you by Starcourt Mall). The teaser seems to show someone hacking into "Lynx Corp.," copyright 1984-1986, and running the program "SilverCatFeeds.exe." All of that culminates in the Dick Clark New Year's footage spinning upside down and flashing a brief glimpse of the Mind Flayer.

Fortnite's Hourly New Year's Eve In-Game Event Now Live

Epic is celebrating a successful year of Fortnite with an in-game New Year's Eve event occurring every hour today.

When the clock hits a new hour, all players in a Fortnite match will see a giant disco ball rip through a rift in the sky. A countdown starts while music begins to play.

Fortnite - New Year's Eve Event Fireworks overlooking Dusty Divot and Salty Springs.

When the countdown reaches zero, a barrage of fireworks are released and every player is forced to boogie down for 10 seconds, no matter if you were in the middle of a fight or just minding your own business. The event concludes with a giant firework of a llama with a promising "2019" underneath.

Virgin Galactic Flight Manages to Reach the 'Edge of Space'

Earlier in December, Virgin Galactic's supersonic space plane the VSS Unity reached the upper limits of Earth’s atmosphere in a test flight, reaching a point that many consider the “edge of space."

As reported by CNN, the rocket-powered plane, flown by two veteran pilots, reached a maximum altitude of 51.4 miles, exceeding the 50-mile altitude that NASA considers the edge of space, but not quite the 62 miles that the widely-accepted Karman Line denotes as the edge of space. This point is vaguely defined, largely due to the nature of Earth’s atmosphere not ending at any particular hight, but rather becoming progressively thinner as altitude increases.

The Predator Alternate Ending Almost Featured a Big Alien Twist

The Predator’s ending already had a bit of a surprise, but one of its alternate endings almost featured a major Alien reference.

SFX artist Yuri Everson posted an image on Instagram that supposedly came from the BCIT Aerospace Centre showing actress Breanna Watkins playing a “Predator Killer Ripley,” with her face covered by a mechanical mask in what appears to be a sleep chamber of some sort.

Why 2018 Was the Best Year For Video Games... Ever

Another year, another reflection on another batch of video games... but this year is different. Because 2018 was the best year for video games ever.

Don’t believe me? Take a close look at the chief contenders below and make up your own mind... but watch out, because 2018 was pretty nuts. Please note that this timeline has a strong American bias since it mostly reflects US release dates... awesome developments in Japan, Europe, and elsewhere that didn’t have an immediate impact in the US aren’t covered here. That means a lot of important contributions to Japanese and UK gaming history have to wait until they have an impact on the American market. We’re looking at you, Rare.

Below is a list of the best years in gaming history, all leading up to the spectacular 2018.

Marvel’s Oscar Hopes May Not Be With Black Panther Anymore

Marvel Studios' Black Panther is nominated for three Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture – Drama. This nomination certainly has Marvel fans a little excited, as until that point, it seemed as if much of Black Panther's odds of making it to the Academy Awards were slimming. Black Panther is still perhaps a long shot (it's competing with critical darlings like A Star is Born, BlacKkKlansman, and If Beale Street Could Talk), but its nomination at the Golden Globes is a pretty big deal.

Why Is the Internet Obsessed With Bird Box?

While Bird Box is hardly Netflix's first big tentpole exclusive horror movie, it more than others seems to have struck a major chord with viewers. The streaming giant reported that Bird Box had the most successful first week of any Netflix film, with over 45 million accounts tuning in. And one need only spend a few minutes browsing Twitter at the moment to see that people have gone a little bit crazy for Bird Box.

So what is it about this horror flick that's making people so obsessed? Why, in a year full of great horror films like Hereditary and A Quiet Place, is Bird Box the toast of social media? Here's why we think the Internet is freaking out over Bird Box.

Midseason TV Shows We Can't Wait to Watch

It's Midseason TV preview time, and the first four months of 2019 are set to sock you square in the squishier as HBO unleashes the final season of Game of Thrones and the third season of True Detective.

With more scripted TV series than ever (some of which aren't even on this list yet, because Netflix hits us with dozens of new unannounced titles each month!), you're going to have your hands, and eyeballs, full with all these new and returning shows.

Not only are series like Gotham, You're the Worst, Broad City, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and (most likely) The Punisher hitting us with final seasons, but Star Trek: Discovery, The Magicians, and American Gods are all back to thrill us with new episodes.

A Cafe in Japan Hires Robot Servers, But With a Twist

A Cafe in Tokyo uses an all-robot staff, though some of its employees that control these servers do so remotely, under special circumstances.

As reported by NextShark, these employees have debilitating conditions like ALS and similar spinal chord injuries, and operate the robot servers from home. They operate an OriHime-D: a 4-foot-tall robot that moves, handles objects, and communicates with patrons at Tokyo’s Cafe DAWN (Diverse Avatar Working Network). Cafe DAWN is intended to resemble the robot-centric cafe featured in the 2008 anime Time of Eve.

Not long ago, a laptop with a touchscreen was considered pretty out of place. Sure, it was nice to have the option to tap or scroll with your finger, but there was no real advantage to having a touchscreen since it was often times easier to just use the touchpad. As tablets continued to gain in popularity, and Microsoft admitted it messed up with Windows 8 by going whole hog with touch, the idea of convertible 2-in-1 laptops was born.

Once you try a pair of wireless headphones, you'll probably never want to go back to wired again. The same can be said for using a wireless mouse too, actually. There's not a huge penalty to cutting the cord, and the gains are pretty massive as you get the exact same features as a wired headset without having to worry about that pesky cable getting caught on something on your desk, or (heaven forbid) having it touch either of your hands while gaming. This is simply not acceptable, so get rid of the cable for good.

Your television's picture might be top of the line, but without a soundbar, you won't be getting the full experience. There’s one truth about the vast majority of flat-panel televisions: the sound they offer is terrible. But it isn’t the television’s fault; they’re doing the best they can. The odds are stacked against them.

Atlus Teases Persona 5 R, Other New Projects

Atlus has officially teased Persona 5 R, which many believe to be an enhanced release of Persona 5.

The title was revealed through a brief video following a broadcast of the Persona animation special Dark Sun... in Japan. The words “Persona 5 R” are never shown, though an official website by the name P5R.jp has been attached to the video, suggesting the upcoming title will include this new letter.

The teaser showcases Tokyo’s Shibuya district, a major location in P5, with screens displaying the P5 icon, followed by the message “New Projects” and “2019.3.” The description of the video clarifies that new information on this title will be coming in March 2019. It’s unclear if the “New Projects” referenced in the trailer solely includes P5R or also involves unannounced spinoff games, like a possible Persona 5 fighting game similar to Persona 4 Arena.

16 Biggest Box Office Flops of 2018

With 2018 winding down, it’s time to start reflecting on the year that was, including the winners… and today’s focus, the losers at the box office. First, though, let’s set a few ground rules.

First off, the movies on this list have all opened in wide release, at least over 1,000 theaters nationwide, so while Gotti ($4.3 million worldwide, $10 million budget) would certainly be considered a bomb, it also only opened in 503 theaters. While it’s numbers are dismal, a movie like Gotti doesn’t have a wide enough release to have the potential to make blockbuster numbers anyway, so it doesn’t really make much sense to include a movie like Gotti here, as far as I’m concerned.

I’m also not including movies that technically ‘made money,’ even though I’m fully aware that movie math isn’t quite the same as traditional math. In the eyes of many, Solo: A Star Wars Story ($213.8 million domestic, $392.9 million worldwide, rumored $300 million budget) could be considered a “bomb,” especially since it’s the lowest-grossing movie in Star Wars history…even though it’s still the ninth highest-grossing movie domestically this year. The “budget” doesn’t include publicity and advertising, which Variety reported last year can cost anywhere between $20 million and $150 million for each movie, but isn’t a commonly reported figure. The production budget also doesn’t include first-dollar gross points paid out to actors, directors, producers and writers and a myriad of other costs, and the most common metric is that a movie needs to at least double its production budget to truly break even.

Batman's Penis and Beyond: The Biggest WTF Moments of 2018 in Comics, Movies and TV

2018 was a pretty strange year for pop culture. Batman couldn't keep his clothes on. Sonic the Hedgehog insisted on showing off his gross-looking legs. Everyone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe either got wiped out of existence or had their Netflix series canceled.

As the year winds down, here's a look back at the five strange developments in movies, TV and comics that had us all saying, "WTF?".

Batman Shows His Penis

DC Comics debuted a new imprint this year called DC Black Label, one geared toward older readers hungry for dark, standalone stories in the vein of The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. That imprint kicked off with the release of Batman: Damned in October, and it immediately became clear just how un-kid-friendly Black Label truly is.

Inside One of the Best Arcades in Japan - Game Center Mikado

Arcades may have died out in much of the world, but in Japan, arcades are still a huge part of gaming culture. One of my favourites is Game Center Mikado in Tokyo – it’s a great place to dive into legendary fighting games and retro classics in a relaxed atmosphere.

Mikado is a couple of stops from Shinjuku in Takadanobaba, a district that’s famous for being the place that Osamu Tezuka chose for his iconic character Astro Boy to be “born.” JR trains play the theme song when they stop at this station, and there are a couple of large murals of Tezuka’s work outside the station.

Game Center Mikado is just around the corner, on an unassuming alley that runs along the train line. This two storey arcade has been one of the central locations for Tokyo’s fighting game scene for more than a decade (it was opened in 2006 but has been in its current location since 2009), playing host to regular tournaments and known for high level play. It’s also – unlike the many Taito Game Stations and Club SEGAs around the country - privately owned.

How Game of Thrones' Main Characters Changed Over the Seasons

The night is dark and full of terrors, and so is the wait until Game of Thrones' eighth and final season premieres in April. To help tide you over, we decided to look back over the years and see just how much the main characters on the show have evolved, both physically (some of them have had pretty dramatic transformations!) and as people.

As the title suggests, spoilers lie ahead in the summaries of these characters' journeys over the years, so if you want to avoid them, you can just click through the photo galleries to see how the characters' looks have changed.

The photo galleries don't include spoilers beyond showing you what the characters look like in a given season.

What Rampage and Tomb Raider Understood That Other Game Movies Didn't

It hardly needs reiterating that major studio feature films based on popular video games have been roundly rejected by audiences and critics pretty much since the mid-1990s. For the longest time, 1995's Mortal Kombat and 2002's Resident Evil were often held up as the exemplars of what the genre could provide, and any world wherein Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil are the best of anything is a sad one indeed.

Throughout the decades, video game fans have been disappointed again and again by flicks like Super Mario Bros. (a cult hit at best), Silent Hill, Silent Hill: Revelation, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Doom, Max Payne, Prince of Persia, Warcraft, Assassin's Creed, and a slew of features directed by notorious schlock auteur Uwe Boll. The best that can be said of any of these is that they're “kinda good if they're on cable and nothing else is on.” Not exactly a high standard.

NASA May Use a 'Tunnelbot' to Search for Life on Jupiter's Moon

Scientists have proposed a way to retrieve samples from Jupiter's icy moon, Europa, which is believed to contain a liquid ocean underneath that could hold microbial life.

Andrew Dombard, associate professor of earth and environmental sciences at the University of Illinois (UIC), along with colleagues, presented a solution by using a nuclear-powered tunneling probe to go deep under the surface of the moon, according to a report by UIC.

“Estimates of the thickness of the ice shell range between 2 and 30 kilometers (1.2 and 18.6 miles), and is a major barrier any lander will have to overcome in order to access areas we think have a chance of holding biosignatures representative of life on Europa,” Dombard said.

Black Mirror Creator on Similarities Between Bandersnatch and RDR2

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is currently available to play/watch on Netflix. You can check out our spoiler-free review right here

Device Support: Available across most newer devices, including TVs, game consoles, web browsers, and Android and iOS devices running the latest version of the Netflix app. It’s not yet supported on Chromecast, Apple TV, and some legacy devices.

Netflix is calling its latest entry in Charlie Brooker's imaginative Black Mirror anthology series an "interactive movie." Why Frank Castle Puts the Vest Back on in The Punisher Season 2

Spirits were high this past summer as a cast of newcomers and returning vets assembled on the Brooklyn set of The Punisher Season 2, unaware that in a few months time the universe of The Defenders would come crashing down.

In the span of weeks, Netflix canceled Iron Fist, then Luke Cage, then Daredevil, which was (reportedly) one of its most watched series. The fate of The Punisher is now in doubt as Disney, home of Marvel Studios, plans to launch its own streaming platform, Disney+, in 2019. Reps for Netflix did not respond to IGN’s most recent requests for comment on the matter, so for the time being at least, it seems it’s business as usual. With a surprise January premiere announced in the past few weeks, there’s a new set of 13 episodes for Marvel's grumpiest gunslinger to unpack.
