Every year, the Oscars award the best in all aspects of filmmaking. Sometimes, that means talented work in various categories is being done on films that are otherwise critical failures.
Following the announcement of the 2017 Oscar nominees (check out the full nominations list for more), IGN is taking a look back at nine "bad" films that still went on to receive Oscar nominations. Of course, because calling a movie "bad" is inherently subjective, our objective barometer for deeming a film "bad" is that it scored 35% or lower on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Read on to learn what aspects of poorly received films, including one from this year, still garnered attention from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
