Mario + Rabbids Prototype Was Made in Under 4 Weeks

When Ubisoft Milan pitched its idea for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle to Nintendo, the team had just three and a half weeks to craft a playable demo before showing it to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

"The first time we proposed the prototype to Miyamoto, we had only three weeks and a half to come up with a playable prototype, because we truly wanted to show him gameplay," creative director Davide Soliani said on the debut episode of IGN Expert Mode.

Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn to Develop Starsky & Hutch TV Reboot

Amazon has announced plans to put Starsky & Hutch back on the streets, steered by Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn.

The Prime Video project is being developed in conjunction with Sony Pictures Television Studios and is being described as a character-driven, one-hour police procedural and “a continuation of the original 1970s series.”

Gunn will be working with writing partners Mark Gunn and Brian Gunn.

“When I was a kid, Starsky & Hutch was the first ‘adult’ show I ever saw, and I fell in love,” said James Gunn in a statement. “It instilled in me a lifelong love of gritty street shows, of killer ’70s threads, and muscle cars. So when Neal Mortiz asked me if I wanted to be a part of an all new Starsky & Hutch on TV, I was instantly intrigued. I teamed up with the two writers I trusted most in the world to work with us, my brother Brian Gunn and my cousin Mark Gunn and together we came up with a show that I’m really proud of. At Amazon I believed we would have the most freedom to create something that is different, challenges the audience, and that strays outside the parameters of genre from time to time.”

Why Mario + Rabbids Made Him Cry

Have you ever wanted to actually sit down with one of the creators that made the game, and be able to just play and chat with them about everything that went into it? On our new show, Expert Mode, we move past the traditional interview format, and actually spend some time on the couch just chatting, playing, and learning.

The five episodes of the show will air first exclusively on Facebook’s new “Watch” platform, so be sure to follow IGN Expert Mode  if you want to see it before it airs in the weeks following on IGN, our apps and places like YouTube.

The stories vary depending on the guest and game, but in addition to learning about the game itself, we hear about things like how it was first pitched, if it had different design elements we never saw, and all of those inside stories you may always wonder about.

Jury Rules Against Nintendo in Wii Remote Lawsuit

After suing Nintendo over the motion-sensing accelerometers used for Wii Remotes, iLife has been awarded $10 million by a Texas Jury.

Nintendo has provided a statement explaining "On Aug. 31, 2017, a jury in Texas found that certain Wii and Wii U video game systems and software bundles infringed a patent belonging to iLife Technologies Inc. related to detecting if a person has fallen down.

"The jury awarded iLife $10 million in damages. Nintendo disagrees with the decision, as Nintendo does not infringe iLife’s patent and the patent is invalid. Nintendo looks forward to raising those issues with the district court and with the court of appeals."

This award is significantly less than what iLife was originally seeking back when the case was raised nearly four years ago. Dallas law firm Munk Wilson Mandala originally filed a $144 million infringement case, on behalf of the company which used the motion sensing technology to monitor infants and the elderly.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Snoke Revealed

From giant hologram to in the flesh — well, in the plastic, Supreme Leader Snoke has been fully revealed as part of a line of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Force Friday II toys.

Check out the video below to see a new toy of Snoke, which offers our best view yet at what the character actually looks like.

Snoke can be seen along an Elite Praetorian Guard for size comparison of the toys, and despite his massive stature in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Snoke stands at a far more reasonable height in toy form. However, it's unclear if this will translate to the character's height in the upcoming film.

We unfortunately also don't know much else about Snoke beyond what The Force Awakens already revealed. Still, a few months ahead of release, plenty has been teased about The Last Jedi.

Dishonored 2 Almost had Emily Walking on Walls

At QuakeCon last week, I caught up with Dishonored’s Creative Director Harvey Smith to talk about Dishonored: Death of the Outsider and the series as a whole.

After discussing Billie Lurk’s new abilities in the upcoming game (you can see them in the video below) I asked Smith if there were any crazy abilities they had tested that ended up on the cutting room floor. Smith revealed that early in development they had planned to let Emily Kaldwin defy gravity.

“In Dishonored 2 we talked about letting Emily walk on walls and ceilings,” Smith told me, “but our version of that was going to be literally changing the way gravity works.”

Street Fighter 2 Getting Special Edition Super NES Cartridge

To celebrate 30 years of street fighting action, iam8bit and Capcom have teamed up to release a 1990's nostalgia-fueled special edition of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior.

This isn't just some repackaged re-release, either. It's an actual, working Super Nintendo cartridge in a tri-fold box and includes a "premium instruction booklet," along with "retro pack-in surprises."

There are two variants of this amazing cartridge: one in "Opaque Ryu Headband Red" and the other in "Glow in the Dark Blanka Green." The glowing cart is translucent in addition to luminescent, so it's got even more '90s cred.

The red version is limited to 4,500 copies, while the glow in the dark variant is limited to just 1,000. And they're randomly inserted into the packages, too, so buying one is a bit of a roll of the dice. But that makes it exciting, too.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild Glitch Removes Cel-Shaded Look

A graphical glitch in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hat removes the game's cartoon art style has been discovered.

As evidenced in the video below, the cel-shading effect is not applied when viewing Link in a specific broken alcove on the Bridge of Hylia, giving the character model a more doll-like look.

To experience this visual trick for yourself, head over to our Breath of the Wild bugs and glitches guide, which also covers a magical ice cream, designated as an Elixir, that random appears in Link's inventory.

Breath of the Wild's second DLC pack, dubbed The Champions' Ballad, will be released later this year and feature new story content that provides additional insight into the four Champions of Hyrule. While you patiently wait for its release, read up on how Breath of the Wild's ending is slightly different in Japanese.

Warning: Spoilers for the Game of Thrones: Season 7 finale, "The Dragon and the Wolf."

Game of Thrones' Season 7 finale was the longest episode of the show to date, mostly because of an extended sequence that brought a dozen major characters to King's Landing for an attempt at truce in the city's old Dragonpit.

Powerful players like Daenerys (who entered on Drogon), Jon Snow, Cersei, Jaime, The Hound, Brienne, Euron, and many more gathered for a reunion of friends, enemies, and frenemies in shoot that director Jeremy Podeswa described to us as "very very challenging."

Cex: Customer Data Stolen in Online Breach

Second-hand games and gadget retailer Cex has reported that a breach of their online security has resulted in customer data being stolen, potentially affecting up to two million customers.

As reported by the BBC, Cex is calling it a "sophisticated breach" stressing that this affects online account holders, while clarifying that in-store data has not been affected. Compromised data includes names, address, email addresses, phone numbers and some credit card information, although credit card data has not been stored since 2009, meaning that most of these cards will have expired by now.

The Walking Dead: Our World is Pokemon Go, With Zombies

In addition to Robert Kirkman's original much-loved comic book series, two TV shows, and a well-received episodic video game adaptation courtesy of Telltale Games, it appears that the world of The Walking Dead will soon be expanding in something of an unexpected direction with the introduction of a new augmented-reality game for iOS and Android.

Details are still hazy, other than an announcement video which you can see below:

Although the trailer doesn't showcase any gameplay details and should be considered a concept more than anything, it does appear that The Walking Dead: Our World will share Pokemon Go's reliance on location-based gameplay. During the trailer Rick, Daryl and Michonne - fan-favourites from the AMC TV show - appear to provide assistance although it isn't made clear how this might be implemented in the game.

Marvel's Inhumans Has a Unique Way for Black Bolt to Speak

If there's one thing you need to know about Inhumans King Black Bolt heading into the series premiere of Marvel's Inhumans, it's that his voice is his superpower in the worst way possible. One word from Black Bolt can level a city, destroy an army or, worse, kill someone close to him. That's why it is his superhero burden to never, ever speak.

Black Bolt's inability to speak due to his power creates great dramatic tension in comic books when the audience can live inside of the character's mind, but is a bit more challenging to convey on a TV show. As the leader of the Inhuman Royal Family that lives in the city of Attilan on the dark side of the moon, TV show Black Bolt needs to be able to communicate with more than just strong eye contact. Anson Mount took on the role of the leader of the Royal Family knowing he would never speak a word as his character, but the series did have a different approach to allowing him to communicate.

Wrestling Wrap Up: John Cena Just Owned Roman Reigns

You all saw that, right? The heated shoot-style segment on RAW wherein John Cena, with all his veteran superhero promos skillz, ferociously tucked Roman Reigns into bed and gave him a savage pat on the forehead, wishing him good dreams and a peaceful rest?

Now, word has it that, as loosey goosey and off-the-cuff as it felt - oh, and there were moments of improv for sure - it was all scripted to feel real and organic. It was basically a "controlled burn." Not to say that there were parts that didn't come from real, genuine places, but in the end it all came from a script.

Terry Pratchett's Unfinished Works Destroyed By Steamroller

All remaining unfinished novels by the late author Terry Pratchett have been destroyed by steamroller - at his specific request.

Pratchett, diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2007, continued to write, increasingly with assistance from other writers, up until his death in 2015. He made a specific request, as relayed by his friend and fellow author Neil Gaiman, that anything he was working on at the time of his death should be "put in the middle of the road . . . and

a steamroller to steamroll over them all".

The Best Sci-Fi Movies Streaming on Netflix

There ain’t no fiction like science-fiction, a broad and expansive genre that includes high-concept brainbenders, fanciful action/adventures, inspirational family epics and desperate cautionary tales. But at the heart of all these films is a shared fascination with what technology can do to a human life and for civilization as a whole, and also a serious contemplation of where we’ve been and we are headed. The future stems from the past and present, and the past and present dictate what we expect from our collective future.

Which is all just a fancy way of saying that sci-fi movies are about big ideas, filtered through a wide variety of subgenres. That’s why when you look at all the sci-fi films on a streaming service like Netflix, you can easily be overwhelmed by the variety on display. Fortunately, we’ve put Netflix’s selection of sci-fi movies under an electron microscope, and isolated only the very best examples of the genre that are currently available on the service.

During today's Nindies presentation, Nintendo revealed that Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition will be coming to Switch in 2018. The five act, episodic adventure game made its debut on PC in 2013, with the final installment set to hit alongside the Switch version sometime next year.

Developed by Cardboard Computer, the fantastic point-and-click adventure game is set in rural America and dripping with magical realism. It doesn't really focus on puzzles, instead leaning heavily on an evocative mood, incredible music, and beautiful writing. It's one of the closest analogues to Twin Peaks in all of gaming.

In our glowing review of Act 2, we said "Kentucky Route Zero is most affecting when you stop and let the surreal visuals, beautiful music, and masterful prose swirl together and fill your lungs."

Overwatch Punishment, Reporting Improvements to Come

Overwatch is due a series of big changes for player reporting and punishments including possible email notifications, less silences, and generally harsher penalties all round.

Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan responded to concerned fan threads on the Overwatch forums today, giving some new details on the Overwatch team's long-term plans when it comes to player behavior.

Kaplan said, initially, the team is, “… re-evaluating every punishment,” including increasing suspension length across the board, removing silences in favor of suspensions and also testing a new email notification system. This system will, “let you know when someone you've reported has been actioned,” hopefully meaning fans won’t feel like their feedback is falling on deaf ears. Season 5 boosters will also be getting bans imminently, Kaplan said, noting that a developer update regarding these changes will air soon. In fact, it's already been recorded.

Justice League: Whedon Will Get Screenplay Credit

Joss Whedon will receive a screenplay credit for his work on Justice League, Warner Bros. has revealed. The film's original mastermind, Zack Snyder, will receive the sole directing credit.

Whedon, who took over for Snyder earlier this year following a family tragedy, will share a screenplay credit with the film's original writer, Chris Terrio. Terrio and Snyder will still share a story credit. These credits were revealed in Warners' fall preview press notes today.

It's notable that, following the seemingly extensive reshoots on Justice League, Whedon won't be getting any kind of co-directing credit with Snyder. It's still unclear just how much Justice League has changed since Snyder departed the project and Whedon stepped in.

Duke Nukem Forever 'Exceeded' Pitchford's Expectations

The infamously long-in-development Duke Nukem Forever didn't garner the greatest critical reception when, after 15 years of development, it finally launched in 2011. Still, the game managed to exceed the expectations of Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford.

On the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, Pitchford reflected back on the project, saying there was an "obscene amount of dysfunction that happened at 3D Realms." So when considering the development trouble Duke Nukem Forever went through, he's pleased with how it ultimately turned out.

"I actually love it, and not because I think it's the greatest game ever, but because my expectations..." he explained, noting "the problem with Duke is it was legendary, so to the outside world, expectations were the highest possible thing."

Justice League Dark: Live-Action Movie Gets New Writer

DC's long-gestating live-action movie Justice League Dark is undergoing a "script polish" from Gerard Johnstone.

As reported by Deadline, Johnstone was one of the potential directors in the running to take the helm of the darker take on DC's heroes, following Doug Liman's departure from the film to direct Lionsgate's upcoming sci-fi adaptation Chaos Walking.

While DC have chosen not to announce a new director (or any casting) as of yet, they were reportedly impressed enough with Johnstone's presentation and his work on the 2014 film Housebound that they've asked him to take a look at the script.
