EA Merges BioWare Montreal With Motive Studios

EA has officially confirmed it's merged BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios.

“The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we’re driving collaboration between studios on key projects," EA told IGN in a statement. "With multiple major projects in development in Montreal, we are merging BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios. This is an ongoing process, but there are many exciting roles and opportunities for everyone on the team."

The merge comes after reports that the Mass Effect series was to be put on hold after the underwhelming release of BioWare Montreal's Mass Effect: Andromeda, and that the studio would instead be focusing on BioWare's other titles.

Minecraft Cross-Play Beta Now Live for Windows 10 and Android

The beta that will allow Windows 10 and Android Minecraft players to play together is now live.

The beta is the first step in Microsoft's Better Together Minecraft upgrade, which aims to unite Minecraft on console, Windows 10, and Android.  The Xbox One beta will be rolling out in the coming days.

Not all of Better Together's features will be available in the beta (servers aren't live) but they're being added as they become ready.

Twin Peaks Won't Answer All Our Questions and That's OK

Warning: Major spoilers for Twin Peaks: The Return ahead.

Twin Peaks: The Return has tested the patience of even its most dedicated fans several times since its debut in May, but nothing — not the Dougie-heavy scenes or Candie’s drawn-out fly-swatting shenanigans or the ultra-violent Part 10 — has agitated viewers as strongly as last night’s episode.

Part 12 teased us with much-anticipated information before shutting us down so often that it became a central theme of the episode. Some would argue that at hour 12 of the show’s 18 hour runtime, audiences deserve to get antsy about the lack of answers it has provided for its core mysteries. While I sympathize with how painful the week long wait between episodes has been, the lack of concrete answers this far into the story should come as no surprise.

Sony Pictures TV to Aquire Anime Distributor Funimation

Funimation Productions will soon be owned by Sony Pictures Television Networks.

As reported by Deadline, Sony Pictures TV has entered into an agreement to purchase 95 percent of the anime distributor for $143 million, valuing the company at about $150 million. Funimation CEO Gen Fukunaga will remain CEO and retain a minority stake in the company.

"With Funimation’s long-established leadership position in anime and Sony's direct access to the creative pipeline in Japan, it will be a great partnership to take Funimation to the next level," Fukunaga said.

HBO Comments on Reported Game of Thrones, Ballers Leak

HBO is calling the recent theft of information relating to its programming the result of a "cyber incident."

In a statement, from HBO chairman Richard Plepler to employees, Plepler acknowledged the attack, saying it "resulted in some stolen proprietary information."

Among that information is "some of our programming," Plepler said. While not explicitly stating which programs were part of the leak, EW reports unaired episodes of Ballers and Room 104 have been posted online.

In addition to the programming, material from next week's episode of Game of Thrones has allegedly been stolen, with the hackers threatening to release more information "soon."

In his statement to HBO employees, Plepler promised teams are working to "protect our collective interests."

Andrea Romano, voiceover and casting director behind dozens of projects including DC Universe Original Movies, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Animaniacs, and the original DuckTales, will retire this week.

Romano's work spans more than three decades of voiceover and animation casting direction, including having personally directed more than 10,000 voice sessions. Though Romano said in a statement she planned to continue working for another two to three years, she has decided to wrap up her current projects over the last few weeks following her diagnosis of optic neuropathy in one eye, which has caused blindness in that eye.

IGN can confirm that Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Orphan) is on board to helm Jungle Cruise, which stars Dwayne Johnson and is based on the Disneyland riverboat theme park ride of the same name.

Riggs' performance has delighted us all, and on a series featuring countless acts of malice and misery, Olenna's clever dialogue and piercing words of wisdom gave us some of the show's most memorable encounters. Olenna has a way of pushing through all the niceties, or not-so--niceties, and getting to the heart the matter, often cutting someone down in the process.

Bumblebee Spinoff Begins Production, John Cena Joins Cast

Atomic Blonde may not have topped the box office in its opening weekend, but the film's debut did overtake one of the movies the Charlize Theron action film has been most compared to — John Wick.

Directed by David Leitch, one half of the directing duo behind John Wick, Atomic Blonde took in an estimated $18.6 million in its debut, while John Wick only pulled in about $14.4 million when it opened in 2014. (Even adjusted for inflation, John Wick wouldn't crack the $15 million-mark for its opening weekend.) With only three days to compare, Atomic Blonde took in approximately $1.5 million more per day of its opening than John Wick did.

Hayley Atwell on What Drew Her to Howards End

MCU star Hayley Atwell recently appeared at the Television Critics Association press tour (where she also spoke briefly to us about wanting her own Peggy Carter Marvel movie) to appear on a panel for her new Starz miniseries, Howards End.

Atwell spoke about what was different about this four-part adaptation of E.M. Forster's famous novel given that it's been adapted for the screen before, most famously in a 1992 movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.

Mostly, Atwell was attracted to the fact that Manchester by the Sea's Kenneth Lonergan was the one molding the work this time around. "I think Kenny Lonergan’s adaptation is very fresh," she said. "It has a lot of energy to it, and there are many scenes of overlapping with the dialogue. So, although we stuck to the script, the script had this fantastic kind of lightness to it and this wit, which meant that despite the constrictions of the costumes and the period, we did feel that we wanted to make it as accessible as possible to modern audiences by not making it feel mannered or held."

Are the Valérian Comics Really a Big Influence on Star Wars?

If you’re a Luc Besson fan, you’ve likely seen at least one of the flashy trailers for his latest movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Like many big-budget movies these days, Valerian is based on a comic. If the Valérian and Laureline comics don’t ring a bell, that’s okay: you’re not alone in not knowing about the French source material.

The thing is that while the trailers for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets may look like a colourful Star Wars prequel rip-off, the reality is that the Valérian and Laureline comics were birthed a decade before the original Star Wars movie hit the big screen in 1977.

There’s been a lot of discussion about just how much of an influence Valérian was on Star Wars. It’s a controversial topic because though Star Wars creator George Lucas acknowledged many influences for his juggernaut sci-fi creation – including Flash Gordon, Toshirô Mifune, Akira Kurosawa, mythological heroes, old series and even comics – Valérian has never been mentioned. AMC Greenlights Blumhouse Horror Anthology TV Series

Today at the Television Critics Association press tour, AMC announced several scripted and non-fiction projects that are currently being developed as part of its "scripts-to-series" initiative.

Shock Theatre, a new sci-fi horror anthology series from The Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero is on the horizon, as well as a non-fiction horror anthology series from Blumhouse Television called Wicked West.

My Hero Academia Episode 30 Review

My Hero Academia has been moving along at a remarkably swift pace the past couple of weeks, and "Climax" continues that momentum, delivering a thrilling conclusion to Iida's ill-conceived quest for vengeance against Hero Killer: Stain.

Once again, Bones must be praised for its incredible animation work, which shines in each character's facial expressions, adding an emotional weight to the stellar writing. The music that accompanies these sequences only heightens the emotional impact, mirroring Iida's internal triumph. A somber piano score plays while Iida lies paralyzed on the ground, and when he finally rises to his feet and comes to Todoroki's aid, the music switches to a rousing beat of drums and brass. The sound then builds to the climactic moment when Deku regains control of his body to join Iida in simultaneously delivering a crushing blow to Stain, which resonated so profoundly on an audio/visual and emotional level.

Pokemon Go Live Events in Europe Delayed

Four live Pokemon Go events in Europe have been delayed for a few months.

Developer Niantic announced today that the Safari Zone events scheduled for August 5 in Copenhagen and Prague, and August 12 in Stockholm and Amsterdam have been delayed until sometime later in the fall.

However, the event in Yokohama, Japan on August 14, as well as the events in France, Spain and Germany on September 16 are still on schedule.

Niantic explained the delay was to ensure "the best possible gameplay experience for European Trainers." To make up for the postponement, the company has promised Pokemon that have been rare in Europe will be appearing more often in a few European cities for a limited time.

Additionally, the Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki took to Twitter to report that Ultra Street Fighter II exceeded Capcom's expectations with 450,000 units sold in Q1, and as a result, the company is "starting to prepare" several titles for Switch.

Captain Phasma is a Star Wars character who didn't get explored to great depth in The Force Awakens, but one who fans will get to learn much more about in the coming months. In addition to the December release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the chrome Stormtrooper will be at the center of an upcoming companion novel, Phasma, and a comic book series -- and no one is more excited about this than Gwendoline Christie.

IGN had the chance to sit down with Christie at the summer 2017 TV Critics' Association press tour while she was promoting her role in Top of the Lake: China Girl, and she was bursting with excitement about the upcoming releases which will explore her Star Wars character more.
