Pre Orders
Pre Orders
Pre orders the age old debate. Should you pre order a game? No, it allows the developers to be sloppy and release a second rate game knowing they have a fan base who have agreed to buy any drivel they release.
Pre orders the age old debate. Should you pre order a game? Yes, it shows the developer they are on the right tracks and gives them the confidence that they can invest more in the development of the current game.
These are two statements I both agree and disagree with. It wasn't until yesterday that I arrived at this conclusion. Prior to this I would have said I was firmly in the don't pre order camp.
So what happened yesterday to make me arrive at this indecisive decision?
Before that lets just cover of early access, this I think could quite easily be bracketed in the categories above, with a slight difference 9 times out of 10 the funds from early access are reinvested in development. I'm not sure that's the case for AAA titles. That being said if you have ever invested in early access you will have undoubtedly be burned as the development seems to dry up and disappear before a finished article appears or token gestures are made before a release scheduled on an obviously unfinished game in some scenarios. There are some excellent examples of these early access programs working Prison Architect and Rimword to highlight a couple.
Anyway back to my change of view on pre orders. I received a text from a friend saying 'Scott are you getting the new Rainbow 6?" I replied 'no I like the look of it, I loved the other Rainbow 6 games. But it doesn't feel like there is enough in it to be a full game. A bit like Star Wars!'
This text message was not the revelation that made me realise pre orders are not all bad.
This came when I arrived home and opened my mail. There it was a brand spanking new copy of Rainbow 6 sent from Tesco. I stood glaring at it in my hall way thinking did some one send me this, did paul buy me a copy and that's why he asked? Then it dawned on me I pre ordered back in June. Mainly because I had vouchers but never the less I pre ordered. Based solely on the memory of the old games and playing with the friend who had texted. That along with the concept that I liked the what i had seen n the videos.
Now I haven't had the chance to play a great deal of it but I have to say the few games I did play were very tense and exciting and well different to most other types of shooter we get to see. It then dawned on me a game doesn't need hours of game play for me to buy it. If its good its worth playing i was fortunate that it seems good.
So should you pre order? My view is we should wait for reviews, but every once in a while showing support for something you love or want isn't a bad thing.
